BareMinerals SPF Powder Foundation Review

Posted on June 30, 2013

The lovely guys at Beauty Cutey sent me a *bareMinerals SPF foundation in ‘Fair’ to trial this week. I was interested to try this product as my skin tends to be dry so I have stayed away from powder foundations in the past and always used liquids.

Bareminerals foundation

‘Magazines and millions of women agree: your skin will love you for this. Our Original SPF 15 Foundation gives you an incredibly flawless, even application and picture-perfect skin. Its silky, soft texture looks like a powder, but it feels like a cream and buffs on beautifully without settling into fine lines or drying out the skin. Made with only the purest, highest quality ingredients — and none of the chemicals and preservatives that can irritate skin. It’s makeup so pure you can sleep in it’

Sounds like a lot to live up to! I’ve also been told this product is absolutely fine for dry skin types as there is no talc in the ingredients so it is not drying to the skin.

Bareminerals foundation review

‘Applying the Makeup is Easy 1. Swirl a small amount of bareMinerals into the lid with the Flawless Application Brush (for lighter coverage) or the Full Coverage Kabuki Brush (for more coverage) until the bareMinerals are tucked into the bristles. 2. Tap off excess. bareMinerals should not be visible on the outside of the brush. 3. Buff bareMinerals onto the skin in a swirling, circular motion, starting on the outside of your face near your cheekbones. Then, buff around your face, working your way to the cheeks, forehead, and nose. Buff until you’re satisfied with the coverage. Less is more when applying bareMinerals.’

I didn’t have a bareMinerals brush so just used a MAC 182 brush to buff into the skin. You can see below you really don’t use much product at all!

So here is a nice close up of my skin before hand, pores and all!

And below after the foundation has been applied – I re-loaded the brush twice. (The black hair on my cheeck is from my new buffer brush by the way!)

I have to say I am so impressed with this product, it took less than a minute to apply, and left a really flawless but natural looking finish. My skin didn’t feel dry, and it didn’t emphasise any dry patches as many foundations tend to. I will definitely be repurchasing this!

How Makeup Transforms My Face!

Posted on June 26, 2013

Following on from my last post featuring some lovely bloggers without makeup (check it out here) I thought I’d talk through my makeup routine and let you know which products I use.

I’d also like to add this isn’t my every day routine, unfortunately I don’t have time to do a ‘full face’ every day! I see this as a good thing though as it gives my skin a chance to breathe!

So, to start with, no makeup at all!

My skin isn’t too bad really, I don’t tend to get spots but I do suffer from dry skin on my forehead so I have to be sure moisturise frequently. For those that have dry skin like me, exfoliating and moisturising are really important to keep the dry skin at bay! (sorry for the miserable face!!)

Firstly I do my eyebrows, I have to fill them in as they’re pretty sparse. I then do my eye makeup – I like neutral tones with a darker shade in the crease, and I always wear eyeliner with a small flick to the side. I also like to add a little highlight on the inner corners of my eyes to brighten them up, I need this especially as I get pretty bad dark circles!

Then primer and foundation – looking better already! I usually use my fingers to apply both.

And blend again…

Add mascara – this really makes a difference as I have short eyelashes.

Bronzer and blush…

Then just add hair, eyelashes and lipgloss… voila! Done!!

Astrid & Miyu Jewellery Secret Box Review

Posted on June 23, 2013

I used to subscribe to beauty boxes, two of the well known ones actually, but almost every month I felt disappointed. I found I could often pick up better sized free samples from beauty counters of products I actually wanted to try! So, I cancelled my subscriptions, and recently came across the Astrid and Miyu Secret Box Subscription.

How is this different?? I’s a  jewellery box subscription! Why has this not been done before!? Astrid and Miyu sell fabulous fashion-forward quality jewellery at really reasonable prices, and their style is right up my street. The Secret Box subscription service is £39 per quarter (every three months) and they promise to send you items worth £100 in every box! These are pieces I would purchase anyway so this is just awesome! When you sign up they send you a questionnaire via email, you can tell them exactly what you like and don’t like so you know the items you receive will be suited to your style. If there’s something you can’t wait to get your hands on you can also shop directly from their site.

The first box was sent earlier in June and this is what I recieved – a high quality pretty box tied with a pink bow.

Inside were three canvas pouches and some cards,

This is my jewellery! I love it all! I have the Conflicting Choices Necklace (£29) the Silky Charm in Fuchsia Bracelet (£19) and the Neon Lights in Yellow Bracelet (£19).

Also included were some cocktail recipe cards, and a money off voucher!

Now the eagle-eyed among you may have noticed that my items did not add up to £100. In fact they added up to £67 worth of jewellery. I contacted Astrid and Miyu to let them know as this is quite a way off the £100 mark. They were very lovely and apologised for the mistake. Straight away they posted me this gorgeous Conflicting Choices Bracelet (worth £24) and I couldn’t be happier!

I absolutely love my jewellery and can’t wait to receive my next box in September!

Celebrities and Bloggers Without Makeup!

Posted on June 20, 2013

You may have seen this news article doing the rounds a couple of months ago, and this more recent one from the Daily Mail showing porn stars before and after makeup. Me, being a girl, thought this all looked pretty normal, and, you know, high five to the make up artist for doing such a good job. My other half on the other hand, was horrified.

‘What? You mean porn stars don’t actually look like that in real life? You mean they have spots and blemishes and greasy skin and stuff like normal people??’

…Yes dear, they do, because they are normal people…

The same goes for celebrities, I don’t know about you but I love nothing more than a papped photo of a pasty skinned-pizza faced film star to brighten my day.

Katie Perry No Makeup

Would you have recognised Katy Perry? I wouldn’t!

Mariah Carey No Makeup

Mariah Carey looks completely different.

Rihanna No Makeup

Rihanna still looks gorgeous without makeup.

Tyra Banks No Makeup

And Tyra Banks has uneven skin and a pretty big forehead going on!

I think it’s just so refreshing to see the proof that these gorgeous polished celebrities are real people too. They are not perfect, and I think a lot of people forget (especially men) that makeup these days covers a multitude of sins, it can completely transform a face into something new, and photos in magazines are pretty much always photoshopped.

So, just for a bit of fun, I asked other bloggers to feature in this post by sending me a picture of themselves before and after makeup. It’s interesting to see that some people really look similar, and some – like me, look completely different. Enjoy!

Illamasqua Hydra Veil Rehydrating Gel Review

Posted on June 11, 2013

As soon as I heard Illamasqua was releasing their Illamasqua Hydra Veil Rehydrating Gel I knew I had to have it. I’m prone to dry and sensitive skin so as soon as I heard the word ‘Rehydrating’ I was sold. I love Illamasqua products, and have recently been looking for some new skincare products such as moisturisers and primers… and it’s my birthday tomorrow too, so I thought it would be rude not to treat myself!

Illamasqua hydra veil rehydrating gel

So is it a primer? Is it a moisturiser?? Here is Illamasqua’s description – ‘Create a radiant finish with Hydra Veil’s instantly rehydrating, gel formula. Providing the optimal base for your make-up, apply before foundation with an Illamasqua Brush.’

Sounds to me like it’s a primer with moisturising ‘rehydrating’ properties. It sounds like the perfect primer for dry skin!

Illamasqua hydraveil

So, you open the jar, and there’s a cute little spatula waiting for you!

Illamasqua Hydra Veil Primer

The product is a clear glossy gel, with a wobbly texture, kind of like a wobbly jelly but slightly wetter if that makes sense!

Illamasqua Hydra Veil Review

The gel has a very light, pleasant scent – which I approve of as I don’t like strongly scented products.

Illamasqua Hydra Veil

I put some on my hand to rub in (probably too much) but after a few moments it really sinks into the skin.

Illamasqua hydra veil gel

I also tried the product on my face (no pictures of this though I’m afraid, as my face looked just the same as with no product) You really do only need the tiniest bit, a little goes a long way! The product absorbed into my skin quickly, my skin definitely felt hydrated and smoother. When I applied my foundation on top it worked fantastically as a primer base – there was no flaking foundation in sight! I often get this on my forehead and around my nose as these are the driest places on my face, but these areas were dramatically improved. I would definitely recommend this as a primer for people with dry skin like me!

* Just as an added bonus, after you place three orders with Illamasqua, you receive a 10% loyalty discount off all future orders, how great is that! 🙂

Have you tried Hydra Veil? I’d love to hear your thoughts xx
