Layla Cosmetics Softouch Nail Polish Review

Posted on March 31, 2014

Hi Guys!

I hope you all had a lovely weekend? Let’s kick this week off with a nail polish review! I haven’t written a nail polish review in quite a while so thought this would be a nice change 🙂 Today’s review is of this gorgeous Layla Cosmetics Softouch Nail Polish in 07 Red Passion.

layla red nail polish

Now I’m not gonna lie, I’m obviously not down with the lingo and wasn’t actually sure what ‘softouch’ meant, so I didn’t know really what to expect with this one! Softouch, it turns out is basically a semi-matte finish, and by semi-matte I mean it’s not a complete flat ‘chalky’ matte, it has a slight sheen to it. I hope that makes sense?

layla cosmetics red nail polish

The bottle is an unusual shape and appeared to be quite generously sized, but it’s actually a pretty standard 10ml. On application the polish appeared glossy and spread well, the formula and consistency were spot on and this polish comes with a fairly large brush so it was easy to apply.

The polish then dried to this lovely semi-matte finish. I was really surprised with how fast it dried – there’s nothing worse than flapping your hands around for what feels like hours on end, only to think your nails are dry, and they’re actually not and get marked! This is definitely one of the fastest drying polishes I have used.

I used two coats of this polish and I’m very impressed, I was quite happy with two coats but if I had more time I’d have gone for three as you can very slightly see through.

So what do you think? I’d love to hear if you’ve tried Layla nail polishes?

Hourglass Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss in Child

hourglass lip gloss review child

Hi Guys!

After purchasing my Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo, I couldn’t wait to try something else out from their range. If you haven’t heard of Hourglass, they are a fabulous luxury cosmetics company founded in 2004 and can be purchased from Space NK. Hourglass products definitely sit at the high end of the cosmetics spectrum – the brand is acclaimed for its breakthrough formulations, technological innovations and unwavering commitment to reinvention with top quality ingredients (don’t ya know!). I’m such a sucker for high end products in pretty packaging!! 🙂

So off I went and ordered the Hourglass Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss in Child. The colour ‘Child’ is a gorgeous sheer warm golden shimmer.

Now this is going to sound silly, but unless you’ve ever held an Hourglass Lipgloss you probably won’t understand (either that or I’m just plain crazy!) The gloss tube is really nice to hold and use, I’d actually go as far as saying it’s ergonomic! It’s kind of a partly flattened cylinder shape. It’s just really nice to hold! Sorry if that sounds a bit weird!! 🙂

Anyway, more about the gloss!

Pure pigment, pure shine, pure luxury—this intensely-hued, super lustrous lip gloss is formulated with active ingredients that hydrate and restore lips for an immediately soft and smooth effect.

• Richly pigmented, high-shine lip gloss also hydrates lips

• Vitamin E-enhanced formula keeps lips from cracking or chapping

• Wears alone or layers over lipstick and liner to impart opulent shine

• Free of parabens, phthalates and sulfates

hourglass lipgloss review

This is definitely one of the best lip glosses I’ve used in a long time. From opening the box, the product looks and feels luxurious. The gloss itself is the perfect formula, it’s not sticky and glides on the lips smoothly. The gorgeous golden shimmer sparkles and catches the light, it’s definitely going to be a staple in my makeup bag this summer!

Hourglass Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Glosses are currently £21 at Space NK, which is fairly expensive, but we all need a treat sometimes, right? 😉

Eve Lom Radiance Lift Foundation Review in Alabaster

Posted on March 27, 2014

Hi Guys!

If you’re mad about makeup like I am, you’ll probably have heard of Eve Lom’s new Complexion range that has recently been launched at Space NK. It always excites me when a well established luxury brand brings out a makeup range! I haven’t been fortunate enough to try any of Eve Lom’s skincare products as yet though, but I’ve heard they are fabulous! When I saw the new Complexion range for sale, I thought it would be crazy not to try something out!

Eve-Lom complexion

How gorgeous do these products look!?

I’m having a few issues finding a good foundation at the moment. My go-to has been Chanel Vitalumiere for a few years now, and last year I also discovered Dior Hydra Life BB Cream which I love. My last bottle of Vitalumiere has pretty much ran out and I’ve been looking to replace it with a cheaper alternative. My latest purchase which was Bourjois Happy Light Foundation didn’t turn out so well – proving that you should ALWAYS try out a foundation on your skin before purchasing! So I’ve been on the hunt again for a new foundation. Eve Lom’s Radiance Lift Foundation really caught my eye – it’s a high end brand, check, looks pretty, check, is crazy expensive, check, so it must be an amazing product, right??

eve lom foundation review

Firstly, here’s a bit more info about the product-

Advanced actively. Anti-ageing foundation that treats your skin to a long lasting weightless veil of silky, hydrating comfort. Feather-light feel with great cover that blends effortlessly for a flawless finish, with pores, fine lines and imperfections instantly minimised. Potent plant extracts plus Rose Flower Wax and Vitamins C and E help lift, firm and repair at the lowest levels, elasticity is restored and skin is kept deep-down hydrated. Meanwhile, SPF15 protects and luminosity-boosting agents brighten, so you achieve a smooth, even complexion that’s illuminated with supple, youthful radiance.

• Perfects and illuminates with full, weightless coverage and flawless matte finish

• Pores, fine lines and imperfections are instantly minimised

• Helps lift, firm and repair for youthful plumpness and elasticity

• Long-lasting, deep-down hydration

• UVA/UVB and antioxidant protection

• Actively beneficial for all skin types.

eve lom alabaster

Key actives:

• Moisturising BerryFlux Vita™ is a patented, super-potent stem cell extract, stimulating hyaluronic acid to deliver hydration and lock it in to the skin’s lowest levels. Rich in antioxidants, it also encourages proteins and ceramides to strengthen the skin’s natural barrier, and helps preserve collagen and elastin for suppleness and tone.

• Lifting Para Cress Flower Extract helps replenish the dermis structure to smooth, lift and improve the skin’s density.

This all sounds rather fantastic, long lasting hydration, lifts, firms, repairs, minimises imperfections… what more does a girl need?

eve lom complexion review

The packaging and casing are gorgeous; the bottle has a matte effect finish with a shiny gold pump.

eve long alabaster swatch

The formula feels good when swatched on the back of my hand, it’s a great density and blends easily. Alabaster is the lightest colour in the range, and it’s about right in terms of lightness but is slightly on the yellow side for my skin tone. (Ok I didn’t actually try this before purchasing because I don’t live near a Space NK…)

eve lom foundation dry skin

And this is what it looks like on…

eve lom foundation alabaster review

eve lom foundation oily skin

It didn’t look good AT ALL. I would probably go so far as to say this is the worst foundation I have ever used. I actually didn’t want to put this last picture up because it looks so bad, but thought I should really as it is a true depiction of what the foundation looked like on my skin. All the above pictures are taken one after another in different lights so you can see that I’m not exaggerating when I say how bad it looked.

Ok so let me start from the beginning – obviouslyI have dry skin, there’s nothing I can do about it except try to look after my skin by keeping it exfoliated and moisturised. I proceeded with my usual skincare routine before using the foundation – I moisturised straight before application and did not use a primer. I know my skin isn’t amazing but surely a £50 foundation ‘for all skin types’ shouldn’t look like this??

dior bb cream

Just for comparison, I took the above picture the next day wearing my Dior Hydra Life BB Cream, and I did nothing different to my skin before hand. You can really tell the difference!

So that’s it I guess, unfortunately this product just didn’t agree with me. To say I’m disappointed would be an understatement. Interestingly I took a look at the customer reviews on the Space NK site and currently they all have 5 stars, except one, one customer has given this foundation only one star, because she has dry skin and said it ‘looked patchy and did not cover well’. I should have really read these reviews before purchasing! The other four reviews on the site all give it 5 stars, so maybe this is a fantastic foundation if you have oily skin…? I’d love to hear if you’ve tried this foundation? Or anything from the Eve Lom Complexion range?

I hope you found my review useful xxx

MAC Nude Lipstick Comparisons and Swatches

Posted on March 26, 2014

Hi Guys!

I’ve been sorting through my makeup and I thought I’d show you my MAC nude lipstick collection, a few of you on Twitter said you’d be interested to see this post so I’ll try to make is as informative as possible! I have quite a few nude lippies and they do look fairly similar on first glance, so for those looking to purchase their first MAC – at £15 a pop now, you’ll want to make sure you’re making the right choice! So, I’ve included swatches for you, on my arm and lips, and descriptions of each lipstick. I’ve also thrown in one of my favourite budget lipsticks for comparison too…

mac nude lipstick comparison_edited-1

mac nude swatches_edited-1

mac nude lipsticks swatches_edited-1

So above are my collection of (mostly) MAC nude lipsticks swatched on my arm, I’ve included two pictures as they’re in slightly different lights. And yes the centre lippy is MUA not MAC 🙂

mac angel review_edited-1

First up we have Angel by MAC. Angel is described as a ‘soft pink’ so I guess technically it’s not a nude? I don’t know! I call a nude anything that’s similar to your own lip colour – please let me know if I’m wrong there! Anyway, Angel is a pretty, girly pink, it has a Frost finish so it’s not completely opaque but just gives you a sheer veil of colour. It’s an easy colour to wear and has a lovely creamy formula.

mac hue 2_edited-1

MAC’s Hue is one of my favourite nudes, it’s a ‘soft pale pink’ shade, and has a Glaze finish. I love the colour of this as it lightens the natural colour of my lips slightly, the only bad point to this one is if my lips are on the dry side this lipstick does emphasise my dry skin.

mua bare lipstick_edited-1

As far as many are concerned, MAC is the holy grail cosmetics brand for lipsticks. I wouldn’t necessarily disagree as I do own quite a few MAC lipsticks and love most of them, but it’s always good to remember there are loads of brands available on the high street now, and most are cheaper than MAC and just as good.

Now considering this MUA budget lippie is definitely the odd one of the group, costing only £1 – I have to say I actually love this lipstick! It feels so creamy and smooth on application, if I had my eyes closed I could mistake it for a lip balm. Also I love the colour, admittedly, the colour doesn’t last as long as MAC’s but at only £1 you really can’t go wrong with this one. Just think, you could buy 15 of these for one MAC lipstick!!

mac honeylove review_edited-1

MAC’s Honeylove is a ‘light beige toned with rose’ with a Matte finish. I tend to wear this one in the summer when I’m a bit tanned (or fake tanned) with some lipgloss on top, as it definitely suits my skin when it’s darker. Again a lovely colour with a gorgeous Matte finish.

mac myth review_edited-1

Myth, | think personally is a bit too light for me, it’s a ‘light neutral nude’ with a Satin finish. I’ve mixed it with other colours before to make my own shade of lipstick, but I don’t really wear this alone. If you have the right skin tone for this colour though it can look great! Because it’s a satin finish it’s really comfortable to wear too.

So there you go! I hope this has been helpful and given you some food for thought? Expensive isn’t always best! 🙂

I’d love to hear if you have any of these lipsticks and what your favourite nude colour is? xxx

MAC Heroine Lipstick Review and Swatches

Posted on March 24, 2014

Hi Guys!

So I recently caved in and purchased MAC’s Heroine lipstick. I went to buy it when it was originally released but I was a bit slow off the mark, and it sold out super fast, so I missed out and was pretty disappointed. Then suddenly MAC was shouting from the rooftops that Heroine was back in stock, woo hoo! So I nabbed one up quickly! I really don’t need any more lipsticks but this just looked like such a gorgeous shade of purple I couldn’t resist!

mac heroine_edited-1

So, Heronie is simply described as ‘bright purple’ by MAC, and it really is! It also has a matte finish, which I realised after I bought it. This did slightly concerned me due to my RIRI Talk That Talk disaster experience, but luckily this is just a matte, and Talk That Talk lipstick was a retro matte, phew!

mac heroine review

The colour is, to me, simply perfection. I know that sounds a bit OTT but purple lipstick is my ‘thing’, I have a small collection of purples which I’m always keen to expand on as there aren’t many out there  that fit my requirements – they always seem a bit to reddish, more on the burgundy side than a true purple – and there definitely aren’t many ‘true’ purple lipsticks around at all! I have in my mind what I’m looking for, this is definitely the closest I’ve found yet.

mac heroine swatches

mac heroine lipstick

Ok I’m in love with this lipstick, I completely understand why it sold out (and has now for a second time) it’s such a wearable colour, even for pale and peculiar people like me! Purple lipsticks are often either very dark, which often doesn’t suit me, or very sheer, and then I’m disappointed with the colour payoff. This is neither, it’s a clean, bright colour, the formula though matte, feels creamy and comfortable to wear, even on my lips which tend to be dry, and it lasts for hours before re-application is required. This definitely gets a 10 out of 10 from me!

I’d love to hear what you think? Did you snap up Heroine or wish you had?

I hope you enjoyed my review xxx
