Must Have Fragrances To Add To Your Wish List!

Posted on November 14, 2018

I have a fantastic bundle of new high street fragrances that have launched over the last few months to share with you today. This is quite a long list, so I’ll try to keep the descriptions pretty short. I’ve added a list of notes for each fragrance, as well as information on similar scents and ‘you’ll like this if..’ for each scent too – enjoy!

Starting with the gorgeous Lancome La Vie Est Belle L’Eclat EDT – this fragrance is easily one of my favourite launches of 2018. La Vie Est Belle L’Eclat opens with wonderful zesty, sparkling notes of mandarin, grapefruit and bergamot, leading to a shimmering floral heart, and a bright and warm base of Iris, Patchouli and, Ambroxan. This is a must try and would make a fabulous Christmas present for Lancome fans!

  • Top notes: Bergamot Oil, Mandarin Oil, Tea Accord
  • Heart notes: Neroli Oil, Sambac Jasmine Absolute, Orange blossom absolute, Rose oil
  • Base notes: Iris Concrete, Patchouli oil, Ambroxan.
  • Smells like / is similar to: Lancome La Vie Est Belle (original)
  • You’ll like this if: you like zesty, fresh, feminine scents

Next, DKNY Stories EDP – this is a vibrant, oriental floral woody scent with a feminine edge, inspired by the dynamic pulse of the city. Stories is the perfect every day scent, that’s sweet, but not overly so, floral, feminine and captivating.

  • Top Notes: Pink Pepper, Pink Guava Mousse, Black Cardamom
  • Middle Notes: Jasmine Sambac, White Tea, Black Iris
  • Base Notes: Vanilla Bean, White Sandalwood, Grey Amber Accord

Elie Saab Girl of Now Shine EDP is next – this is a beautifully radiant gourmand fragrance that opens with edible notes of roasted pistachio and juicy pineapple, before a heart of sunny ylang ylang, jasmine, ormond flower, almond and orange blossom. In the dry down, the earthiness of iris and patchouli combines with fuzzy vanilla, creating a trail that lingers with sensuality.

  • Top Notes: Roasted Pistachio, Pineapple
  • Heart Notes: Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Ormond Flower
  • Base Notes: Iris, Vanilla, Patchouli
  • Smells like / is similar to: Elie Saab Girl of Now, but this is lighter and more floral.
  • You’ll like this if: you like iris, almond, gourmand scents.

Next up is Nina Ricci Bella EDT – a vibrant fruity gourmand fragrance, Bella opens with a mouth-watering acidic rhubarb accord and the fresh and bold zest of green mandarin. In the heart, a rose jelly blends with rich floral facets of luminous freesia, and an indulgent base of white musk and vanilla adds warmth and smoothness to the accord.

  • Top Notes: Rhubarb, Mandarin
  • Heart Notes: Rose Jelly, Freesia
  • Base Notes: Vanilla, White Musk
  • Smells like / is similar to: Nina Ricci Les Belles Liberty Fizz from wayyy back on the 90’s

Michael Kors Wonderlust Eau Fresh – think vibrant, carefree and endless possibilities. Wonderlust Eau Fresh is a luxurious interpretation of the original, opening with sparkling pink grapefruit, tart Granny Smith apples, and Italian bergamot. Mugler Aura EDT – this is actually the first Mugler fragrance I’ve tried in a long time, and I absolutely love it! Aura EDP is a glowing, fresh oriental botanical scent created around three distinctive and addictive ‘hearts’. The instinctive heart contains the tiger liana plant which is the guiding thread and signature note of this fragrance and features fresh, green, sweet, animalistic and smoky notes for instinctive femininity. The botanical heart is a duo of green and floral notes with a blend of rhubarb leaves and orange blossom absolute for an explosive and intense freshness, and the animal heart is the combination of bourbon vanilla absolute and wolfwood, a new silky enveloping wood with a sensual texture.

  • Instinctive Heart: Tiger Liana
  • Botanical Heart: Rhubarb Leaf, Orange Blossom Absolute
  • Animal Heart: Bourbon Vanilla Absolute, Wolfwood
  • Smells like / is similar to: Aura EDP – this is basically a lighter version
  • You’ll like this if: you like fresh, dewy, clean scents.

Next up is Maison Margeila Mutiny – as a big fan of tuberose, I was excited to try this! Mutiny is described as a modern take on a timeless classic, it’s an oriental floral fragrance with ‘deconstructed’ tuberose, meaning different qualities of tuberose have been positioned in the top, heart and base notes of the fragrance. The result is a daring floral that reveals the true facets of the flower, combining tuberose with a warm leather accord.

  • Top Notes: Mandarin Oil, Pink Pepper, Saffron.
  • Heart Notes: Orange Flower, Sambac Jasmine Absolute, and Tuberose Absolute.
  • Base Notes: Leather Accord, Bourbon Vanilla, Oud.
  • Smells like / is similar to: Paco Rabanne Olympea Intense
  • You’ll like this if: you like tuberose based fragrances

Marc Jacobs Daisy Love EDT – the latest flanker in the Daisy collection is Daisy Love EDT, an addictive sparkling gourmand scent with care-free, radiant florals. This gourmand radiant perfume reveals its first notes in a vibrant burst of sweet cloudberries. Delicate daisy tree petals mingle with sparkling cashmere musks and driftwood to create a lasting and memorable gourmand twist. This is a beautiful, easy-to-wear, every day scent.

  • Top Notes: Crystalized Cloudberries.
  • Heart Notes: Daisy Tree Petals.
  • Base Notes: Cashmere Musks, Driftwood.
  • Smells like / is similar to: Marc Jacobs Daisy
  • You’ll like this if: you like sparkling, radiant, bright fragrances

Next we have Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal By Night EDP – the latest take on Scandal, Scandal By Night offers a deeper take on the original, where the creaminess of gardenia has been replaced with the sweetness of honeyed tuberose. Sticky and rich, the smoothness of tonka bean and sandalwood create an almond-like scent, kissing your skin with an addictive, almost-edible finale. This fragrance is wonderfully edible – a must try for fans of Jean Paul Gaultier!

  • Top Note: Tuberose
  • Heart Notes: Honey
  • Base Notes: Sandalwood, Tonka Bean
  • Smells like / is similar to: JPG Scandal (original) YSL Black Opium, Rhianna Reb’l Fleur
  • You’ll like this if: you like warm, sweet, honey, gourmand scents.

Jimmy Choo Fever EDP – the latest fragrance from Jimmy Choo offers a floral gourmand with rich, sensual facets. Fever is fun, glamorous and tempting, opening with juicy lychee and grapefruit and sticky black plum nectar, leading to soft side of heliotrope to powder down the wild florals in the core. As the scent warms of the skin, addictive tones of roasted tonka bean and sweet, resinous benzoin are what gives Jimmy Choo Fever its multifaceted personality, creating a beautiful lingering aroma.

  • Top Notes: Black Plum Nectar, Lychee, Grapefruit
  • Heart Notes: Heliotrope, Vanilla Orchid, Jasmine
  • Base Notes: Roasted Tonka Bean, Benzoin, Sandalwood
  • Smells like / is similar to: YSL Black Opium, Kenzo Elixir
  • You’ll like this if: you like sweet, spicy fragrances, or any other Jimmy Choo scent

Juicy Couture Oui EDP – this is a vibrantly rich and fresh fragrance, opening with the tart freshness of watermelon and lemon fusion, and the beautiful floral heart of sophisticated jasmine absolute paired with wild tuberose leads to a warming base techno woods, amber and musc. This would make a gorgeous new signature scent for somebody this Christmas!

  • Top Notes: Water Lemon, Acai Tea Natureprint, Pear Infusion
  • Heart Notes: Jasmine Absolute, Wild Tuberose, Dewy Honeysuckle Natureprint
  • Base Notes: Techno Woods, Amber Resins, Captive Musks
  • Smells like / is similar to: Marc Jacobs Daisy
  • You’ll like this if: you like clean, fresh, girly scents.

And last but not least, the gorgeous Paco Rabanne Black XS For Her EDP – an electrifying floral oriental fragrance that’s both sensual and provocative. The scent opens with creamy ylang-ylang and tempting vanilla, before making way for a distinctive heart of warm popped puffed corn, musk and milkwood. The seductive base of sandalwood blends with hot ambrette seed to create an sensuous, intoxicating blend. This is the perfect evening scent, and the bottle is stunning too – be sure to add this to your Christmas list!

  • Top Notes: Ylang-ylang, Vanilla
  • Heart Notes: Popcorn, Musk, Milkwood
  • Base Notes: Sandalwood, Ambrette Seed
  • Smells like / is similar to: Black XS (original)

Guerlain Abeille Royale Skincare Collection

Posted on November 5, 2018

I have a few products from Guerlain’s gorgeous Abeille Royale collection to share with you today. With over 10 years of research, Guerlain has scientifically proven the effectiveness of bee products in boosting the skin’s revitalisation, and their Abeille Royale skincare range offers an advanced solution to effectively combat the visible signs of ageing, namely wrinkles and loss of firmness…

Bee products are some of the world’s most effective natural healing substances. Guerlain Research has been working continuously with honeys and royal jelly to create Abeille Royale: a skincare programme that scientifically proves their exceptional capacity to minimise the visible signs of ageing on skin.

There are three main ingredients at the heart of the Abeille Royale collection –

  • Ouessant Honey – the Island of Ouessant has an ecosystem that is parasite-free and protected from pesticides. Here, the Black Bee produces honey rich in amino acids, trace elements and high in fructose-content. This honey offers the essential ingredients that are vital in the repair process of skin tissue.
  • Guerlain Exclusive Royal Jelly – Royal Jelly is the most precious substance produced by bees. It is reserved exclusively for feeding queen bees and offers nourishment for the skin as well. Guerlain developed its own Exclusive Royal Jelly rich in nutrients and is a natural source of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and vitamins.
  • Commiphora Oil – Commiphora (myrrh) gum has been used in Indian traditional medicine for 3,000 years, for its soothing and restorative properties. The oil is rich in biologically active molecules (commipherine and commipherol) that play a key role in skin renewal.

Firstly I have the Abeille Royale Youth Watery Oil – utilising the power of Ouessant Black Bee Honey and Royal Jelly, this super lightweight formula combines the power of a serum, the richness of an oil and the freshness of a lotion to re-plump, smooth and illuminate the skin.

I love how beautifully light this is – it literally is a ‘Watery Oil’. When you shake the bottle, the micro balls of oil mix into the liquid (they’re settled at the bottom of the bottle in the picture above) and when you apply to the product, they burst on application and melt into the skin. The Abeille Royale Youth Watery Oil leaves skin feeling amazingly soft, smooth and radiant.

The Abeille Royale Black Bee Honey Balm is the perfect extra-nourishing product to soothe dry and weakened skin this winter. This balm has been specially formulated for dry, undernourished skin that’s been weakened by extreme conditions or by cosmetic procedures.

The balm itself has the texture of a thick cream, and it has a lovely light scent. It contains highly concentrated Ouessant Black Bee Honey to optimise skin repair, whilst offering a nourishing, protective barrier to help restore and strengthen the skin. I love how this sinks into the skin without leaving any residue. It’s worked wonders so far on the dry areas on my face!

And lastly, the new Abeille Royale Double R Renew & Repair Serum – this has been designed to target the visible signs of ageing, including loss of skin elasticity, wrinkles, dull skin, imperfections and large pores. This serum combines a soft-peel treatment with a lifting effect to help the face look fuller and more refined.

The ‘soft peel’ element of the formula includes 3 types of AHA’s which diffuse gradually, making them as effective as strong concentrations, but without any discomfort and redness. This gradual ‘soft-peeling’ leads to a skin renewal, enhancing the skin’s quality and texture and restoring its radiance. The serum also offers the benefits of Guerlain’s Royal Jelly and Black Bee Honey.

My first impression of the Double R Renew & Repair Serum is that I absolutely love it – this is probably the most luxurious serum I’ve ever tried. I’ve only used this a few times so far, and it just feels wonderful on the skin, it’s smoothing, moisturising, and leaves my skin feeling supple and hydrated – this a real treat for the complexion!

The Miller Harris Forage Fragrance Collection

Posted on October 29, 2018

A fragrance collection based on the idea of foraging is an interesting concept – I live in the Norfolk countryside where foraging opportunities are literally on my doorstep, we have apples, berries, hops and much more growing freely all around us. My husband is also fan of brewing his own beer, and currently has some sloe gin on the go which I’m looking forward to sampling soon! Miller Harris’ Forage collection however, is based on foraging in the city – urban foraging – discovering hidden gems where you’d least expect in a bustling city…

Our perfumers set out on a mission to create fragrances inspired by ingredients which can be discovered growing wild in London and this initial series of three fragrances are their interpretations. The starting points of a wider range of urban foraging-inspired scents, each of these perfumes presents a dynamic contrast between nature and the built environment and also examines the ways in which the two creatively co-exist. Just as the city sends tendrils ever further into Nature, so Nature surges back through the urban sprawl, pushing up through concrete cracks and finding unexpected oases in which to prosper, pulse and propagate. Strong, deep roots impel the pavement flower. Honey is made at rooftop apiaries. Wild fruits ripen behind locked gates, in parkland shadows, just over there…

The Forage Collection includes three fragrances, and I have Hidden in the Rooftops to share with you today – High above the city, London is home to countless hives of diligent honeybees. A whoosh of fresh honeyed floralcy leads you to the crisp green privet of a hidden rooftop garden. The hazy yellow sun warms new flowers, motes of pollen and seed buds dance lazily.

Hidden on the Rooftops is definitely my favourite out of the three fragrances, it’s very much a unisex scent that’s clean, fresh and warm. I love that this fragrance is based on honey bees! The scent instantly hits you with a noticeably green opening, including notes of fresh Violet Leaves and zesty Lime, leading to a floral heart dedicated to the honey bee – where sweet nectar notes of Pollen and Honey mingle with Syringa, Privet Flower and Honeysuckle. The rich and warm base beautifully rounds off the scent with warming Sandalwood, Ambergris and Musk.

  • Top Notes: Bergamot, Lime, Angelica Seeds, Violet Leaf Absolute, Clary Sage, Red Berries, Black Pepper
  • Heart Notes: Syringa, Privet Flower, Pollen, Honey, Honeysuckle, Turkish Rose Oil, Tea
  • Base notes: Vetiver, Ambergris, Sandalwood, Driftwood, Musk

The two other fragrances in the collection are –

Lost in the City – Ferns force their way through walls and concrete, their green intensity splashing vibrantly against the grey backdrop of buildings. In LOST, this intense verdancy is contrasted with the sharp pink snap of wild rhubarb, making the senses fizz.

  • Top Notes: Bergamot Zest, Angelica Seed, Blackcurrant,
  • Heart Notes: Rhubarb, Rose petals, Geranium
  • Base Notes: Earl Grey Tea, Crisp Amber, Musk

Wander Through The Parks – Stinging nettles spring up all over London, producing a unique, sparkling green scent. Before they flower their spiky greens are smoothed, the sappy earthiness of the stems blend with zesty fruits.

  • Top Notes: Pink Grapefruit, Juicy Mandarin, Blackcurrant, Pink Berries
  • Heart Notes: Galibanum, Fig, Nettle, Indian Tuberose.
  • Base Notes: Violet Leaf, Cashmere Wood, Patchouli Fraction, Musk

The Forage collection is available now at Miller Harris and Feelunique

Sleek Makeup NEW Lip Shot Lip Glosses

Posted on October 24, 2018

Sleek are one of my all time favourite budget beauty brands, I’ve said it before and I’ve said it again, I can’t get enough of their True Colour Lipstick in Liquer! Anyway that’s not what I’m talking about today. I wanted to share some of their fantastic new releases with you – the gorgeous new Lip Shots…

Our highly pigmented intense impact and shine gloss. Non-sticky formula on your lips, developed to compliment all skin tones. It’s mega full-coverage and long-lasting. Get full pay off in one stroke.

The shades I have are as follows –

  • Corrupted – an intense true red
  • Do What I Want – a bright intense cool toned pink
  • Dressed To Kill – a mid plum purple
  • Ready Or Not – a deep plum with a hint of taupe
  • Behind Closed Doors – a muted pinky mauve
  • Plot Twist – a muted peachy pink
  • Get Free – a light bright peach
  • Don’t Ask – a nude light beige

You can see by the swatches that these glosses are amazingly well pigmented, and after trying them out I can tell you this is absolutely the case on the lips too. I’m honestly so impressed with these glosses, they give the most beautiful, opaque, true colour, with a shiny gloss finish.

Of course these are glosses, so I wouldn’t expect them to stay put for hours on end. They do last well – without any stickiness, and basically do exactly what you’d expect. These are exactly what I’d hoped they would be – another winner from Sleek Makeup!

Have you tried any products from Sleek Makeup? Let me know! xx

Sleek Cosmetics Lip Shots are £4.99 each and available now at Boots.

Huda Beauty Latest Launches – Worth the Splurge?

Posted on October 23, 2018

I have a few of Huda’s latest launches to share with you today – let’s start by looking at the Rose Gold Remastered Palette!

I probably don’t have to explain that the Rose Gold Remastered Palette is a re-launch of Huda’s original Rose Gold Palette. My first thought would be why re-launch a product that isn’t actually that old? Well Huda explained that the original Rose Gold Palette was basically the best she could do at the time due to financial constraints, and now the company is doing well, she wanted to launch the palette again with both improved formulas and packaging.

The Rose Gold Remastered Palette promises redesigned shades with creamier, more intense pigmentation. It includes 18 luxurious, talc free eyeshadows in four key textures – 8 buttery mattes, 8 melted metal shadows, 1 wet & dry black shadow and 1 pressed pearls shadow. The outer packaging also showcases Huda’s own favourite look and includes a large mirror (which wasn’t included in the original palette)

I’ve included Huda’s own swatches as mine were unfortunately quite abysmal. So, all shades in this palette have been ‘remastered’ with some also being removed and completely changed. In terms of updates from the original palette, the mattes we’re definitely the best improvement to me, they’re much better in terms of pigmentation and they feel easier to work with too – I particularly love shades Doll Face and Demure. The Melted Metal shadows can now be applied with a brush too, yay! These were slightly problematic in the original palette as brush application literally did nothing, and not everyone likes applying makeup with their fingers. The new Melted Metals are also now wonderfully buttery smooth and give the most beautiful high shine finish. The one shade which I wasn’t wowed on though was Black Truffle. This is the only one which has been designed to be used both wet and dry (dry as an eyeshadow and wet as a liner) and I found this didn’t give a very intense black as an eyeliner unfortunately. The rest of the palette more than makes up for this though as I know wouldn’t use this as an eyeliner any way.

Overall, this is a gorgeous palette, but it’s definitely not a must have if you already have the original Rose Gold palette. The Remastered palette is a great upgrade, offering more intense pigmentation, and the shadows just overall feel improved compared to the original.

I also have the #FauxFilter Foundation – this is very much a full coverage foundation, available in 30 shades, promising a flawless long-lasting finish. Described as an ‘intelligent liquid’, this foundation contains hydrating Argan Oil and Centella Asiatica to help the formula blend seamlessly into the skin, giving a radiant matte powder finish that’s neither dry nor cakey.

Firstly, I picked Vanilla, which is completely the wrong shade (I always think I’m paler than I am) – so I decided to try the foundation out on a day where I didn’t have to go out and horrify the public. My mid-thirties skin isn’t always a fan of matte finish foundations, as they tend to leave my complexion looking a bit flat and feeling dry, which then requires more products to rectify. The FauxFilter Foundation promises a matte yet luminous finish (somehow!) so I was interested to see how it would work.

Well, I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. This did not cling to any dry areas, it didn’t feel drying, and it didn’t make my face look older than my years! I liked the matte finish, it wasn’t too matte, it was nice, flawless, and as natural as I think you can get for a full coverage foundation. I wouldn’t say this gives any luminosity like the description says, and I will say this is a heavier feeling foundation – you can notice this is on the skin, which may be an issue or may not depending on personal preference. Overall I liked the finish, it was very full coverage, even with the smallest amount of product – this will literally cover everything. Personally, I’d probably save this foundation for ‘going out, out’ evening wear rather than every day use.

The Easy Bake Loose Powder is another new product, and came with plenty of controversy, but I’m not going to get into that now. This loose powder has been designed to create an airbrushed, long-lasting complexion whilst blurring the appearance of pores and fine lines, and holding makeup in place all day long.

Again, powders and baking can also be problematic for me. I have dry skin, and the fact that I’m the wrong side of 30 means I have to be careful with any sort of under eye coverage. The Easy Bake Loose Powder comes in a selection of shades for all skin tones (I have shade Pound Cake), and it has a super light and silky texture. I found that if I dusted it on lightly it worked really well setting my under eye concealer, it definitely kept my makeup in place and didn’t feel too drying. It’s also great for controlling shine on other areas of the face too.

And the Demi Matte Lipsticks – the perfect antidote to those that are very much over the super-matte lip trend, Huda’s new Demi Matte lipsticks promise the perfect combination of a comfortable, hydrating cream liquid lipstick with a non-moving, velvety, satin finish.

The idea of a Demi-matte liquid lipstick really appeals – something that stays put but doesn’t feel drying on the lips sounds like a Godsend. These liquid lipsticks include something called ‘Maxi-Lip™’ to stimulate collagen and hydrate, as well as hint of menthol, to give a temporary cooling effect and tingling sensation to leave lips looking visibly plumper.

The product itself has a thick, creamy formula, that gives a fully opaque finish in one swipe. I’d say the finish is shinier than what I’d expect from a Demi-matte – though if you choose to blot, this definitely mattifies the finish.

I have to say I’m in love with these lipsticks. I have shades Mogul, a light nude pink, Boy Collector an intense true red, and Day Slayer, a light nude beige. All three shades are very comfortable on the lips, and have an element of dry down that helps them stay put, but without drying the lips in any way.

(I just wanted to add a quick note here to let you know I’ll be reviewing the Precious Stones Palettes in a separate post – look out for this in the next few days!)

Overall, I’m really impressed with all the above products, and I’m really looking forward to the New Nude Palette next, it looks so pretty! Are you loving any Huda Beauty products right now? Let me know! xx

Too Faced Melted Matte-tallic Liquid Lipsticks

Posted on October 11, 2018

Too Faced have so many new products launching right now, there’s the 20th Anniversary Collection, the Tutti Fruity Collection, and not forgetting the brand new Christmas gift sets! Today however, I have some of their latest lipsticks from the Melted range – the Melted Matte-tallics…

Drench lips in an uber – luxurious, velvety matte formula that coats lips in a unique, brushed metal matte finish. The formula remains lighweight and comfortable with up to 24 hours wear, without compromising on the dazzling dimensional matte effect.

The Melted Matte-tallic lipsticks come in 13 shades, and the ones I have above are as follows –

  • Faking It – a warm toned medium nude.
  • Breakup Makeup– a pretty nude pink.
  • Bitch, I’m Too Faced – an intense true red.
  • I Wanna Rock With You – a deep burgundy.
  • Scream My Name – an intense deep purple.
  • The Real Teal – a deep blue toned teal.
  • Magic Metal Transformer – different from the above lipsticks, the Transformer uses opalescent prismatic pearls to give the lips an iridescent finish. This has been made to use over liquid lipsticks, or on its own.

Firstly I must apologise as I just couldn’t get the photos of my swatches to do justice to the unusual metallic yet matte finish, so I’ve attached a stock photo of swatches which I think is pretty good. (Note the far right swatch is the teal shade with the Transformer on top)

The liquid formula is smooth and light, and feels comfortable to wear – it is slightly drying but I think that’s to be expected with most liquid lipsticks that fully dry down. Too Faced promise ’24-hour long-wearing color’ which I have no idea if it’s true or not. I’m not sure who could wear a lipstick for 24 hours straight! Anyway, the finish like I’ve already mentioned, is quite unusual. Too Faced describes it really well – ‘brushed metal’ is the term they use – metallic, yet matte. They kind of have a sheen, but no shine. It’s definitely something different! In terms of wear, they do last a long time, and are completely transfer proof when they dry down. I actually think these are pretty fun and different, and definitely worth checking out if you’re a Too Faced fan! My favourite shade is Breakup Makeup 🙂

Too Faced Melted Matte-tallic Liquid Lipsticks are available now at Debenhams and Too Faced.
