NEW Jeffree Star Cosmetics Velour Liquid Lipsticks Review

Posted on January 5, 2015

Hi Guys!

I’ve been following Jeffree Star on Instagram for a while now, and if you haven’t heard of him, he’s a self made makeup artist, musician, singer, model, fashion designer and all round general fabulous person. I mean just look at his face, and his hair! He’s so beautiful! Anyway, as soon as I saw he was releasing his own line of insanely bright lip products, I was on his site and ordered quicker than a MUA in a makeup sale!

Now in hindsight this was in fact a mistake, and my keenness actually cost me a fair bit of moulah. I had no idea his products would be available in the UK, and as this is his first line, and it’s brand new, I guess I just thought they would be US only. So I purchased the full collection of three Velour Liquid Lipsticks for $48.00 plus $10.95 shipping (this came to £39.01) and all was good, but I then received a note from the post office informing me I had just over £14 taxes and fees to pay – gah! I kind of half expected it but I’d hoped for the best! So now my total spend has gone up to over £53 which I wasn’t overly pleased about, and just to add to the fun I then found out you can buy them from Beauty Bay for £16 each!! Oh well!!

Anyway on to the products! The Velour Liquid Lipsticks are very similar to Lime Crime’s Velvetines (but the formula is thicker) and Makeup Revolution’s Velvet Matte Lip Lacquers are actually very similar. They’re kind of half way between a lipstick and a gloss, but without being glossy or sticky. Just imagine the most highly pigmented lipstick ever, melted down and put in a lipgloss tube, I think that’s the best way I can describe them. They are also vegan and cruelty free.

The tubes themselves are closer to a lipstick size than a gloss tube, but thicker, and the barrel is clear so you can see the colour of the product. I love the hot pink casing too!

The outer packaging is also super cute in hot pink with metallic gold stars.

The wands are fairly short and chunky, they have a large sized doe foot applicator and pick up a good amount of product.

Just look at the swatches! These lippies are SO intensely pigmented, and it’s worth mentioning they do stain, which is to be expected really with this amount of pigmentation.

I’ve also included some pictures of them on my lips below – please forgive me for the totally wonky application, I’ve started dieting and I’ve cut our sugar, and I think my body is having some sort of crazy sugar come down which is making me quite shaky!

Prom Night is pretty much ‘The brightest matte pink in the world!’ It’s a bright, intense, almost but not quite neon pink. I think this is my favourite of the three. The Velour Liquid Lipsticks apply wet, and you have maybe 30 seconds to a minute to manipulate and spread out the product until it dries. And when it dries there’s no going back! This stuff does not budge at all. I wore Prom night for about half a day on the first day I received the package, I only applied it once, and forgot to remove it when I went to bed (oops) I woke up with bright pink lips, and only a couple of small bright pink smudges on my pillow.

Redrum is a mid toned red that’s described as ‘The perfect red: this matte cool toned red looks amazing on any skin tone’ but it seems ever so slightly on the pinkish side to me. This is a beautiful shade that’s definitely the most easy to wear out of the three. It would be perfect for a classic red lip look with a modern twist.

I’m Royalty is a blue toned purple, described as ‘A royal purple for any diva who wants to make a statement’. This is the darkest and hardest to wear out of the bunch. You know I’m a fan of purple lipsticks but this one really is quite a hard shade to pull off, and you really need precise application too (which I can’t seem to do at the moment) otherwise the slightest wobble at the edges will result in a clearly obvious less than perfect lip line.

I’d recommend exfoliating lips and making sure they’re in tip top condition before applying, the amount of rubbing to get this stuff off to begin with has definitely helped exfoliate! Jeffree also advises to avoid food with oil in it (I’m not sure what might happen there) and no making out! Overall I really love these lipsticks, the pigmentation and formula is spot on, but, I wouldn’t pay £53+ again for the three! I think if you are interested in trying them, £13 each at Cocktail Cosmetics is much more reasonable – also I’ve linked my Makeup Revolution Velvet Matte Lip Lacquer post above, they actually sell some quite similar colours if you look at their site, and the formula is very smilier to Jeffree Star’s Velvet Lipsticks, oh and they’re only £3 each.

So what do you think, will you be snapping these up? I hope you enjoyed my review xxx

The Lipstick Game Changer.

Posted on September 29, 2014

Hi Guys!

Well, just look what I’ve got! Ever since I first heard about the NARS Audacious lipsticks last month, they have been at the very top of my wish list. If you saw my post where I mentioned the NARS Audacious Vault you’ll see what I mean. I fell completely in love.

I pre-ordered three – yes I managed to get my wish list of ten down to three! – lipsticks. I must confess there are still three others sitting in my basket at the moment, I have no idea how long I’ll manage to leave them there as I’ve now put myself on a spending ban (boo hoo). Anyway, this time I went for Annabella (red), Anita (nude) and Angela (fuchsia).

The Audacious lipsticks come in a matte black casing – but this time it’s not the usual NARS rubberised finish, the casings are metal – and when you put the lid on you realise they’re magnetised too, and these lipsticks have the most amazing click. I can’t even tell you. I haven’t found a lipstick lid click as satisfying as this before! And funnily enough, the three lipsticks didn’t like sitting together if I didn’t have them a certain way round, as the magnets kept repelling each other! 🙂

So, on to the Audacious formula. It’s described as –

A modern lipstick so shamelessly seductive in touch and texture the sensation is audacious. Unadulterated luxury glides on like satin across skin with single-stroke coverage. A spectrum of shades for unstoppable impact. One-stroke, full-coverage creamy wear, luxurious texture and enriched with ingredients to smooth and nourish lips.

And yeah they got it pretty much spot on!

So first up we have Annabella. If you’re a regular you’ll know I never show off my pearlies, mainly because they’re not particularly straight or white. Annabella though, is THE most perfect red, and it made my teeth look amazingly white. This has easily become an instant favourite for me. I have a heap of red lippies in my stash so I think I’ll do a comparison post soon!

Anita is a stunning nude, not too light or too dark, it is a beautiful muted rose shade that is perfect for every day wear. You can see just how amazingly creamy these lipsticks are too, the formula is one of the best I’ve come across.

And lastly Angela, this is a bright orchid / fuchsia shade, it’s verging on purple but not quite. If you’re a bit nervous of purple lipsticks, this would be a fab starter shade to ease you in before delving into a deeper purple. I actually tried this one first and decided it was my favourite, but since wearing the other colours they’re all so gorgeous in their own right now I’m actually in love with all three of these lipsticks! 🙂

The formula of the Audacious lipsticks really is perfect. It’s not often I use this word but I really cannot flaw them. They’re creamy, comfortable, long lasting, and the pigmentation is amazing! The only downside is the price, at £24 each they’re definitely classed as a luxury product, but I honest;y think they’re worth every penny.

The NARS Audacious lipsticks are available from Space NK and Lookfantastic.

So what do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts! xxx

NEW Makeup Revolution Matte Lip Lacquers!

Posted on September 12, 2014

Hi Guys!

Today I have some of the newest offerings from Makeup Revolution to share with you! They have just gone and added four new shades to their Salvation Velvet Matte Lip Lacquer range, and I happen to have noticed that three out of the four shades are dead ringers for Lime Crime’s Clueless Witch Velvetines collection…

First up is Depravity, a bright clean blue toned purple, and it is stunning! This is easily my favourite shade out of the four and I can’t get enough of it! It’s everything I look for in a lip product, with 100% full opacity and a matte finish, what more does a girl need!? I also found this one applied the most evenly and was the easiest to manipulate compared to the rest.

Next we have Rebel, an intense pinkish red. This is definitely the most easy to wear colour out of the four shades, this bright intense berry red is the perfect colour for the impending autumn and winter seasons too!

Next is Vamp, I’ve just described this as deepest purple, it’s almost black but not quite. Now I should probably point out that this was actually the last colour I tested, as you can see the edges of my lips have gone a bit pink due to rubbing the previous products off. Once dried, these lacquers seriously DO NOT BUDGE, but I”ll tell you more about that in a bit.

And lastly we have Black Heart, which is a super dark purple, so dark it really is almost black. You can see this is very similar to Vamp, there’s really not much in it al all except this is slightly darker.

Now these lacquers are tricky things, the formula is obviously a liquid, which is easily to manipulate on the lips when wet, you can spread it around and build up the colour, but as soon as it dries it’s pretty much like glue! It doesn’t budge for love nor money! (think that’s a phrase my mum uses) I had to rub and rub and RUB to get this stuff off when I was testing it. And yes it was a bit of a pain, but at the end of the day we all want long lasting lipstick, don’t we? So now we have it!

I’d recommend practicing with these before rushing to put them on before going out, like I said, this stuff won’t move once it’s dried. I found it pretty tricky to get a good clean line around the lips – because the lacquers are so super pigmented, any tiny hint of imperfection shows. My personal favourite, Depravity seemed to be the easiest to apply, though I’m not sure why as the formula appeared the same at the other shades. And the darker shades seemed to be a bit more difficult. All you need is a bit of practice and a steady hand!

I’ve compared some of my hand swatches to the Lime Crime Clueless Witch Velvetines product images above. I do have a Lime Crime Velvetine, but it’s not one of the Clueless Witch collection, so I don’t really think it would be fair to compare. You can see the colours are pretty similar though!

So there we have it, another fab bunch of products from Makeup Revolution, oh and did I mention these are only £3 each! What a bargain! I wonder what they’ll think of next!?

(Oh and I just thought I’d mention I haven’t actually got my septum pierced, it’s a fake ring from Rackk & Ruin, do you like?)

I hope you enjoyed my review xxx

Purple Lipstick Comparisons and Swatches!

Posted on April 17, 2014

Hi Guys!

Finally I’ve gotten around to getting all my purple lipsticks together! 🙂

I have two main makeup bags, plus my day handbag with more than a handful of lipsticks in at any one time, oh and a dressing table full of makeup! So everything is usually mixed up and misplaced most of the time! (I know I really need to get organised) Anyway I finally got all my purples lippies together and was quite surprised to find I actually have six! I could’ve sworn I only had a couple! (I actually realised after writing this that I in fact have seven, and I I’ve lost one as well, oops) Purple lipsticks can be a bit hit and miss for me, wether it’s in terms of colour payoff of formula, so I thought I’d swatch and compare them all for you so you can see some of what I consider to be the best!

mac hellraiser lipstick

So first up we have Hellraiser by MAC. This was from the 2010 Dazzle Lipstick collection. It is a ‘darkened mauve-plum with bluish-silver glitter’ and has a sheer finish. Considering this is packed full of micro glitter, it actually has a fantastic formula and feels comfortable to wear. I know that next to the lipsticks above this looks pink, but it is actually a purple! I love the iridescent effect this lipstick has.

mac go for it

Go For It is from MAC’s In The Groove collection from 2010, it’s a Cream Sheen colour. When I first bought this lipstick, it was my first experience of the Cream Sheen formula, and I was disappointed with how sheer it was. obviously though it’s meant to be sheer, the clue is in the name!! I haven’t used this lipstick for a long time, and trying out again has actually made me view it in a new light – I really like it now! I usually go for more opaque colours, so this is a nice lighter option which I think will be great for the coming summer.

maybelline lavender voltage lipstick

I came across this on ebay when I was searching for purple lippies to add to my collection, as soon as I saw this I HAD TO HAVE IT. It’s the most perfect purple I’ve ever seen. It’s opaque enough without looking to heavy, and it has a fabulous creamy formula. Unfortunately this colour isn’t available in the UK for some reason, and it’s a limited edition colour, so if you’re interested in buying one I’d grab one now while you can! Also – I bought a purple Maybelline gloss to go with this, the review of this will be up on the blog shortly. You can check out the lipstick post here.

mac violetta

MAC’s Violetta was definitely only my favourite purple lipsticks before I discovered Heroine. Violetta is a gorgeous purple with an Amplified Creme finish. It was originally released in the Venemous Villains collection and has been re-released a couple of times since, and now lives permanently in the Pro range. Usually I stay away from frosts but I actually really like this one! This colour is very easy to wear.

mac heroine

MAC’s Heroine is new to the market and completely awesome! It is a bright purple lipstick in a Matte finish. Due to the matte finish, the colour is very intense and striking, which I love! The formula is fab for a Matte as it doesn’t dry my lips out and is comfortable to wear all day. You can check out my review here.

sleek exxxaggerate

Exxxaggerate by Sleek is a good dupe for MAC’s Heroine, it’s not spot on but it’s the best I’ve seen. The colour isn’t quite as intense as Heroine, and the formula is definitely not as creamy, it’s still a great lipstick though and at a third of the price of MAC, I’d definitely recommend Sleek for lipsticks. I have another MAC / Sleek comparison here if you want to check it out 🙂

So that’s it! What do you think? Are you a fan of purple lipstick? xxx

Maybelline Lavender Voltage Limited Edition Lipstick

Posted on April 11, 2014

Hi Guys!

So here’s the next instalment in my purple lipstick obsession! (You can check out my MAC Heroine review here) I saw this little beauty on ebay when I was looking for purple lipsticks, it’s a limited edition and I had to buy it from the US, I’m pretty sure it’s not available here in the UK as I haven’t seen it anywhere – but please let me know if I’m wrong!

maybelline lavender voltage

bright purple lipstick

Maybelline’s Lavender Voltage is the most stunning bright purple lipstick I’ve ever seen! It’s my perfect purple! It’s part of the Color Sensational range, like my Neon Red Lipstick – meaning it should have a really good colour payoff.

1000 lavender voltage

lavender voltage swatch

Well I have to say this lipstick did not disappoint, it’s the perfect combination of fantastic pigmentation, in a moisturising, creamy lipstick. It’s slightly bluer toned than Heronie, and obviously not a matte finish, so if you suffer with dry lips I’d definitely recommend this as a fab alternative if you’re put off by a matte finish. I’m completely in love with this colour! It’s not the longest lasting lipstick I’ve ever tried, but I’m so happy with the colour and creamy finish, this really doesn’t matter to me 🙂

Have you tried Lavender Voltage? I’d love to hear if you have!

OCC Cosmetic Colour Pencil in Hoochie Review & Swatches

Posted on February 14, 2014

Hi Guys!

I may have bought a couple of bits from Love Makeup the other day, one of them being an OCC Cosmetic Colour Pencil. These pencils come in a rainbow of colours and can be used anywhere on the body. As soon as I saw them on sale I knew I had to try them! You can see the gorgeous range of available colours below – the ones starred mean they are not recommended for use around the immediate eye area.

occ pencils

I decided to go for the ‘Hoochie’ pencil, a bright magenta purple. I have a thing for purple lipstick, and as far as I’m concerned, the brighter the better!

occ cosmetic colour pencil

The pencil arrived in a clear plastic case, the packaging is white and fairly basic looking.

occ hoochie pencil

The colour of the pencil is gorgeous, it’s intensely pigmented and exactly as I hoped it would be!

hoochie swatch

The formula was slightly harder than I expected, though the pencil was not sharp. It’s actually a really good density for making clear, sharp lines.

best purple lipstick

So this is what it looks like! you can see it has a matte finish, just like using a matte lipstick. It has highlighted some of the dry parts on my lips but this is the norm for a matte finish. I absolutely love the colour!!

occ hoochie review

If you love bright lips, or want to try out purple lips without it being too deep a colour or too blueish, I’d definitely recommend giving this a go. These pencils have amazing pigmentation and stay put all day. It really doesn’t budge! I definitely want to try Anime (bright pink) and NSFW (true red) next 🙂

I hope you enjoyed my review! xxx

MAC Violetta Lipstick Review & Swatches

Posted on December 21, 2013

Hi Guys!

I thought it was about time I let you know about one of my all time favourite lipsticks – MAC Violetta. I have a real thing for purple lipsticks, but I don’t come across them very often, or at least the shades that catch my eye. So when I saw this was on sale at MAC (quite a long time ago now) I quickly snapped it up.

mac violetta review

Violetta is an amplified cream shade, described as a ‘bright clean vibrant purple’. It is actually a MAC Pro shade so is not usually available in the standard stores but occasionally it is included in MAC’s seasonal collections – I bought this a few years ago at least and I know I’ve seen it on sale once since then. Hence I haven’t dared use it very much in case I can’t get my hands on a new one!

mac violetta

To me, this is the most perfect purple that I’ve found so far. It has a slight irridescence to it and is very smooth and comfortable to wear.

mac lipstick review

Do you own Violetta? I’d love to hear if you could recommend any other purple lipsticks?

I hope you enjoyed my review 🙂 xx
