Must Have Fragrances To Add To Your Wish List!

Posted on November 14, 2018

I have a fantastic bundle of new high street fragrances that have launched over the last few months to share with you today. This is quite a long list, so I’ll try to keep the descriptions pretty short. I’ve added a list of notes for each fragrance, as well as information on similar scents and ‘you’ll like this if..’ for each scent too – enjoy!

Starting with the gorgeous Lancome La Vie Est Belle L’Eclat EDT – this fragrance is easily one of my favourite launches of 2018. La Vie Est Belle L’Eclat opens with wonderful zesty, sparkling notes of mandarin, grapefruit and bergamot, leading to a shimmering floral heart, and a bright and warm base of Iris, Patchouli and, Ambroxan. This is a must try and would make a fabulous Christmas present for Lancome fans!

  • Top notes: Bergamot Oil, Mandarin Oil, Tea Accord
  • Heart notes: Neroli Oil, Sambac Jasmine Absolute, Orange blossom absolute, Rose oil
  • Base notes: Iris Concrete, Patchouli oil, Ambroxan.
  • Smells like / is similar to: Lancome La Vie Est Belle (original)
  • You’ll like this if: you like zesty, fresh, feminine scents

Next, DKNY Stories EDP – this is a vibrant, oriental floral woody scent with a feminine edge, inspired by the dynamic pulse of the city. Stories is the perfect every day scent, that’s sweet, but not overly so, floral, feminine and captivating.

  • Top Notes: Pink Pepper, Pink Guava Mousse, Black Cardamom
  • Middle Notes: Jasmine Sambac, White Tea, Black Iris
  • Base Notes: Vanilla Bean, White Sandalwood, Grey Amber Accord
  • Smells like / is similar to: Mugler Womanity

Elie Saab Girl of Now Shine EDP is next – this is a beautifully radiant gourmand fragrance that opens with edible notes of roasted pistachio and juicy pineapple, before a heart of sunny ylang ylang, jasmine, ormond flower, almond and orange blossom. In the dry down, the earthiness of iris and patchouli combines with fuzzy vanilla, creating a trail that lingers with sensuality.

  • Top Notes: Roasted Pistachio, Pineapple
  • Heart Notes: Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Ormond Flower
  • Base Notes: Iris, Vanilla, Patchouli
  • Smells like / is similar to: Elie Saab Girl of Now, but this is lighter and more floral.
  • You’ll like this if: you like iris, almond, gourmand scents.

Next up is Nina Ricci Bella EDT – a vibrant fruity gourmand fragrance, Bella opens with a mouth-watering acidic rhubarb accord and the fresh and bold zest of green mandarin. In the heart, a rose jelly blends with rich floral facets of luminous freesia, and an indulgent base of white musk and vanilla adds warmth and smoothness to the accord.

  • Top Notes: Rhubarb, Mandarin
  • Heart Notes: Rose Jelly, Freesia
  • Base Notes: Vanilla, White Musk
  • Smells like / is similar to: Nina Ricci Les Belles Liberty Fizz from wayyy back on the 90’s

Michael Kors Wonderlust Eau Fresh – think vibrant, carefree and endless possibilities. Wonderlust Eau Fresh is a luxurious interpretation of the original, opening with sparkling pink grapefruit, tart Granny Smith apples, and Italian bergamot. Mugler Aura EDT – this is actually the first Mugler fragrance I’ve tried in a long time, and I absolutely love it! Aura EDP is a glowing, fresh oriental botanical scent created around three distinctive and addictive ‘hearts’. The instinctive heart contains the tiger liana plant which is the guiding thread and signature note of this fragrance and features fresh, green, sweet, animalistic and smoky notes for instinctive femininity. The botanical heart is a duo of green and floral notes with a blend of rhubarb leaves and orange blossom absolute for an explosive and intense freshness, and the animal heart is the combination of bourbon vanilla absolute and wolfwood, a new silky enveloping wood with a sensual texture.

  • Instinctive Heart: Tiger Liana
  • Botanical Heart: Rhubarb Leaf, Orange Blossom Absolute
  • Animal Heart: Bourbon Vanilla Absolute, Wolfwood
  • Smells like / is similar to: Aura EDP – this is basically a lighter version
  • You’ll like this if: you like fresh, dewy, clean scents.

Next up is Maison Margeila Mutiny – as a big fan of tuberose, I was excited to try this! Mutiny is described as a modern take on a timeless classic, it’s an oriental floral fragrance with ‘deconstructed’ tuberose, meaning different qualities of tuberose have been positioned in the top, heart and base notes of the fragrance. The result is a daring floral that reveals the true facets of the flower, combining tuberose with a warm leather accord.

  • Top Notes: Mandarin Oil, Pink Pepper, Saffron.
  • Heart Notes: Orange Flower, Sambac Jasmine Absolute, and Tuberose Absolute.
  • Base Notes: Leather Accord, Bourbon Vanilla, Oud.
  • Smells like / is similar to: Paco Rabanne Olympea Intense
  • You’ll like this if: you like tuberose based fragrances

Marc Jacobs Daisy Love EDT – the latest flanker in the Daisy collection is Daisy Love EDT, an addictive sparkling gourmand scent with care-free, radiant florals. This gourmand radiant perfume reveals its first notes in a vibrant burst of sweet cloudberries. Delicate daisy tree petals mingle with sparkling cashmere musks and driftwood to create a lasting and memorable gourmand twist. This is a beautiful, easy-to-wear, every day scent.

  • Top Notes: Crystalized Cloudberries.
  • Heart Notes: Daisy Tree Petals.
  • Base Notes: Cashmere Musks, Driftwood.
  • Smells like / is similar to: Marc Jacobs Daisy
  • You’ll like this if: you like sparkling, radiant, bright fragrances

Next we have Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal By Night EDP – the latest take on Scandal, Scandal By Night offers a deeper take on the original, where the creaminess of gardenia has been replaced with the sweetness of honeyed tuberose. Sticky and rich, the smoothness of tonka bean and sandalwood create an almond-like scent, kissing your skin with an addictive, almost-edible finale. This fragrance is wonderfully edible – a must try for fans of Jean Paul Gaultier!

  • Top Note: Tuberose
  • Heart Notes: Honey
  • Base Notes: Sandalwood, Tonka Bean
  • Smells like / is similar to: JPG Scandal (original) YSL Black Opium, Rhianna Reb’l Fleur
  • You’ll like this if: you like warm, sweet, honey, gourmand scents.

Jimmy Choo Fever EDP – the latest fragrance from Jimmy Choo offers a floral gourmand with rich, sensual facets. Fever is fun, glamorous and tempting, opening with juicy lychee and grapefruit and sticky black plum nectar, leading to soft side of heliotrope to powder down the wild florals in the core. As the scent warms of the skin, addictive tones of roasted tonka bean and sweet, resinous benzoin are what gives Jimmy Choo Fever its multifaceted personality, creating a beautiful lingering aroma.

  • Top Notes: Black Plum Nectar, Lychee, Grapefruit
  • Heart Notes: Heliotrope, Vanilla Orchid, Jasmine
  • Base Notes: Roasted Tonka Bean, Benzoin, Sandalwood
  • Smells like / is similar to: YSL Black Opium, Kenzo Elixir
  • You’ll like this if: you like sweet, spicy fragrances, or any other Jimmy Choo scent

Juicy Couture Oui EDP – this is a vibrantly rich and fresh fragrance, opening with the tart freshness of watermelon and lemon fusion, and the beautiful floral heart of sophisticated jasmine absolute paired with wild tuberose leads to a warming base techno woods, amber and musc. This would make a gorgeous new signature scent for somebody this Christmas!

  • Top Notes: Water Lemon, Acai Tea Natureprint, Pear Infusion
  • Heart Notes: Jasmine Absolute, Wild Tuberose, Dewy Honeysuckle Natureprint
  • Base Notes: Techno Woods, Amber Resins, Captive Musks
  • Smells like / is similar to: Marc Jacobs Daisy
  • You’ll like this if: you like clean, fresh, girly scents.

And last but not least, the gorgeous Paco Rabanne Black XS For Her EDP – an electrifying floral oriental fragrance that’s both sensual and provocative. The scent opens with creamy ylang-ylang and tempting vanilla, before making way for a distinctive heart of warm popped puffed corn, musk and milkwood. The seductive base of sandalwood blends with hot ambrette seed to create an sensuous, intoxicating blend. This is the perfect evening scent, and the bottle is stunning too – be sure to add this to your Christmas list!

  • Top Notes: Ylang-ylang, Vanilla
  • Heart Notes: Popcorn, Musk, Milkwood
  • Base Notes: Sandalwood, Ambrette Seed

The Miller Harris Forage Fragrance Collection

Posted on October 29, 2018

A fragrance collection based on the idea of foraging is an interesting concept – I live in the Norfolk countryside where foraging opportunities are literally on my doorstep, we have apples, berries, hops and much more growing freely all around us. My husband is also fan of brewing his own beer, and currently has some sloe gin on the go which I’m looking forward to sampling soon! Miller Harris’ Forage collection however, is based on foraging in the city – urban foraging – discovering hidden gems where you’d least expect in a bustling city…

Our perfumers set out on a mission to create fragrances inspired by ingredients which can be discovered growing wild in London and this initial series of three fragrances are their interpretations. The starting points of a wider range of urban foraging-inspired scents, each of these perfumes presents a dynamic contrast between nature and the built environment and also examines the ways in which the two creatively co-exist. Just as the city sends tendrils ever further into Nature, so Nature surges back through the urban sprawl, pushing up through concrete cracks and finding unexpected oases in which to prosper, pulse and propagate. Strong, deep roots impel the pavement flower. Honey is made at rooftop apiaries. Wild fruits ripen behind locked gates, in parkland shadows, just over there…

The Forage Collection includes three fragrances, and I have Hidden in the Rooftops to share with you today – High above the city, London is home to countless hives of diligent honeybees. A whoosh of fresh honeyed floralcy leads you to the crisp green privet of a hidden rooftop garden. The hazy yellow sun warms new flowers, motes of pollen and seed buds dance lazily.

Hidden on the Rooftops is definitely my favourite out of the three fragrances, it’s very much a unisex scent that’s clean, fresh and warm. I love that this fragrance is based on honey bees! The scent instantly hits you with a noticeably green opening, including notes of fresh Violet Leaves and zesty Lime, leading to a floral heart dedicated to the honey bee – where sweet nectar notes of Pollen and Honey mingle with Syringa, Privet Flower and Honeysuckle. The rich and warm base beautifully rounds off the scent with warming Sandalwood, Ambergris and Musk.

  • Top Notes: Bergamot, Lime, Angelica Seeds, Violet Leaf Absolute, Clary Sage, Red Berries, Black Pepper
  • Heart Notes: Syringa, Privet Flower, Pollen, Honey, Honeysuckle, Turkish Rose Oil, Tea
  • Base notes: Vetiver, Ambergris, Sandalwood, Driftwood, Musk

The two other fragrances in the collection are –

Lost in the City – Ferns force their way through walls and concrete, their green intensity splashing vibrantly against the grey backdrop of buildings. In LOST, this intense verdancy is contrasted with the sharp pink snap of wild rhubarb, making the senses fizz.

  • Top Notes: Bergamot Zest, Angelica Seed, Blackcurrant,
  • Heart Notes: Rhubarb, Rose petals, Geranium
  • Base Notes: Earl Grey Tea, Crisp Amber, Musk

Wander Through The Parks – Stinging nettles spring up all over London, producing a unique, sparkling green scent. Before they flower their spiky greens are smoothed, the sappy earthiness of the stems blend with zesty fruits.

  • Top Notes: Pink Grapefruit, Juicy Mandarin, Blackcurrant, Pink Berries
  • Heart Notes: Galibanum, Fig, Nettle, Indian Tuberose.
  • Base Notes: Violet Leaf, Cashmere Wood, Patchouli Fraction, Musk

The Forage collection is available now at Miller Harris and Feelunique

New Men’s Fragrance Launch: John Wayne Duke EDP

Posted on August 7, 2018

I don’t talk too much about men’s fragrance on TSNC, but when one comes along that offers something different and catches my eye, you know I’m going to share it with you!

As soon as I heard about the new John Wayne ‘Duke’ fragrance, my very first thought was OMG my Dad would love that! – and that’s exactly what the creator is going for. Let me just rewind for a second here just in case you’re not aware of John Wayne. He was an actor that rose to fame in the 1940’s and was incredibly successful right through to the 70’s, mostly in country and western films. Because of this, he has a massive yet quite niche fan base – essentially men of a certain age that grew up watching and idolising him, exactly like my dad!

Over the years I have witnessed my dad watch the same old movies time and time again, and though they pretty much all look the same to me, there’s always cowboys, horses, saloons with swing doors, men drinking whiskey, smoking, guns, fights and lots of drama – and that’s exactly what this fragrance smells like, it’s like the essence of a classic western movie has been bottled, ready for the wearer to spray it on and transport back in time.

The box has a faux leather finish, with an outline of John Wayne and minimal text, and the bottle design is based on a classic hip flask, with a real leather cover, stitching detail and a printed John Wayne logo. Duke is a very well thought out, luxury sent, and pretty much ticks all the boxes in terms of what you’d expect when you understand its origins.

A scent that challenges men to live up to their highest potential, the new “DUKE” Fragrance marks the revival of a true American Icon whilst installing within it all the essences of the west. Clean Masculine John Wayne “Duke” is a distinctive fragrance capturing the bold and energetic spirit of this Icon of the screen. First, a uniquely charismatic opening of assorted spices and Tobacco leaf draws you back in time to the new frontier that was the west, where you discover a warm heart of vanilla and cocoa as you sat around the campfire with the coffee boiling, and where earthy woods and spices adds depth of character to the vastness of the open range, but the true star of this fragrance is the essence of John Wayne, the essence that embodies the quiet strength and conviction of the modern cowboy, and gives this fragrance a strong, sexy masculine finish.

  • Top Notes: Grapefruit, orange
  • Heart Notes: Red fruits, clove, cinnamon, jasmine
  • Base Notes: Amber, cedarwood, patchouli, vetivert

Honestly this fragrance just smells like I see my dad in my imagination (if that makes sense), I love it so much! And I know he is going to be absolutely thrilled when I gift it to him 🙂

John Wayne Duke EDP is available to buy now at Iconic Fragrances.

Penhaligon’s Hidden London Collection: Marylebone Wood EDP

Posted on August 3, 2018

At last Friday is here! I hope you’ve been having a lovely week? I’ve been incredibly busy, and I’m now trying to catch up with everything!

Today I have a gorgeous new fragrance from Penhaligon’s to share with you. Their latest olfactory collection, The Hidden London Collection, has just launched with a trio of elegant eau de parfum fragrances, inviting us to discover the city…

Some would say there is no better way to discover a city than by foot. Indeed, how else to get to truly know a city than to lose oneself into its streets? They might also say that there is no better way to travel than with the power of scent. Whether through the generally uplifting effect it has on one’s soul, whether because of childhood associations with Nanny, the Library; or the soft skin of a cherished lover, fragrance is a journey. Penhaligon’s invites you now on a journey through London. Hidden London invites you on a tour around its streets, to discover what remains hidden until we truly look.

The collection includes three fragrances named after boroughs in London: Belgravia Chypre, Kensington Amber, and Marylebone Wood.

Elegant, refined and classic, Marylebone Wood is a fragrance that makes an understated statement. It reeks of a luxury and sophistication, in a way that only a Penhaligon’s fragrance can. I’d say this is definitely a more masculine scent, though it’s still definitely on the unisex spectrum and of course it can be worn by anyone.

Intimate, characterful elegance, Marylebone has a feeling of home about it. A winding lane, Georgian brick houses, Sherlock Holmes’s abode, and the Wallace Collection, as well as its proximity to London’s parks; all are a breath of fresh air.

Marylebone Wood is quintessentially British, its no doubt a modern scent, whilst offering a distinct nod to London’s rich history. This is a beautifully formal scent, with notes of dry smoky sandalwood, a mossy vetiver, and creamy warm patchouli – simply beautiful.

  • Top Notes: Grapefruit
  • Heart Notes: No Heart Notes
  • Base Notes: Cedarwood, Sandalwood, vetiver, Patchouli, Amber

The Penhaligon’s Hidden London Collection of fragrances is available now at Penhaligon’s and Harrods.

Perfume Inspired by Music: Jusbox No Rules Niche Fragrance

Posted on July 16, 2018

As a gal that’s a little bit obsessed with fragrance, honestly nothing excites me more than discovering a new brand! Jusbox Perfumes are a relatively new niche fragrance company that explore the unique connection between scent and music.

You’ll probably be aware that both music and fragrance can be directly linked to our memories – you hear a certain song and it’ll remind you of a certain person, an event, an emotion, and exactly the same goes for scent. Certain smells will take you straight to a point in time in your memory as soon as you smell them. Jusbox aim to unite music and scent, with a unique range of contemporary fragrances inspired by musical icons, eras and genres.

One of Jusbox’s latest launches is No Rules is inspired by punk music…

“…Punk was a teenage revolution. We didn’t know what we wanted but we knew we wanted something different. There were no rules in punk. The only rule was be interesting, be innovative, challenge the status quo. Don’t just say it, shout it…shout it with rage and honesty…. It was an explosion of creativity. Everything changed. It rewrote the rules, it was anarchy, it challenged everything.”

What to expect from a fragrance based on music? It’s hard to know – I would expect something quite unusual and innovative, and I have to say that’s exactly what you get with No Rules. This is very much a unisex scent – it’s no more feminine than it is masculine, and I’d also say it’s quite polarising, I think you’ll either love No Rules or you just won’t get it. On initially trying the fragrance, I’m immediately hit with a soapy note, tinged with a metallic element – it’s like nothing I’ve ever smelled before. The more obvious ‘punky’ notes in this scent being the Metal accord, to remind you of the excessive and very recognisable use of safety pins and studs in the punk movement, Leather, of course for leather biker jackets, and also Vinyl, representing vinyl records. There are also notes of cool Aldehydes and Ether contrasting with the warmness of Cinnamon and Leather.

Punk, by definition was an ‘anti’ movement, there were no rules, and though I wasn’t personally around when Punk was at its full force, so I can’t really appreciate the atmosphere of the time. What I can say is that No Rules is unusual, creative and unexpected, and in that sense it does a fantastic job of representing the punk ethos.

  • Top Notes: Aldehydic, Ethereal and Saffron
  • Heart Notes: Lavender, Vinyl and Cinnamon
  • Base Notes: Leathery accord, Birch bark and Musk

Jusbox fragrances are available now exclusively at Selfridges.

Guerlain Terracotta Summer Escape 2018 & Aqua Allegoria Passiflora Fragrance

Posted on July 13, 2018

I always get excited about Guerlain’s new collections – Guerlain is one of my all-time favourite brands, and their products are always so beautiful! I have a couple of makeup items from their latest Terracotta collection, as well as a brand new fragrance to share with you today…

Looking to get away from it all? Longing for summer? The Terracotta Summer Escape collection from Guerlain takes you on a journey… Set off straight away for three paradise islands, in the footsteps of sun-loving globetrotters keen to escape the everyday… Adventurous, romantic or sparkling, they have just one wish: to reveal the intensity of their tan, highlight their skin’s vibrant glow and wear the most beautiful colours. We follow their lead!

Firstly, the brand new Terracotta Cushion, this is described as a fresh and sun-kissed fluid foundation that looks to create a flawless tan and skin glowing with vitality – and it also includes added SPF20. I have shade Moyen (medium) and there’s also a lighter shade available (Naturel). I have to say even though this is a little on the dark side for me, it really does give a beautifully flawless, yet natural and luminous finish to the skin. The foundation itself is very lightweight feeling and can be easily built up with the applicator sponge included to give more coverage if needed. I honestly love this product and absolutely need to get the lighter version asap! This really is healthy glow makeup at its best!

And I also have the stunning Terracotta Route des Îles Collector’s Powder. You know when you have a product that’s so pretty that you don’t want to use it and ‘ruin’ it? I’m having this problem right now!

This gorgeous tan enhancing bronzer has a real nautical feel to it – it’s housed in a luxurious (environmentally sound) mahogany wood compact inspired by yacht decks, and the powder itself is embossed with a striking compass motif. It offers two tones of bronzer to warm and brighten the complexion, and the powder itself is a combination of the best-selling Terracotta shade 03 – the finish is subtly iridescent, radiant and yet incredibly natural, and the centre of the powder is a gorgeous apricot shade which can be swirled in with the bronzer or used on its own as a blush. This is just such a stunning product, it’s definitely a must-have for fans of the brand.

And on to fragrance now, I also have one of the latest additions to the Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Fresh Fragrances Collection, Passiflora EDT

The Aqua Allegoria collection reinvents the simplicity of botanical accords as crystal clear as water, gathered from all the gardens of the world. The result is a delicious wave of fresh fragrances, tender shades and cheerful moods. Eaux de Toilette that combine the freshness of a Cologne with the lingering trail of a Guerlain perfume, majestically showcasing Calabrian bergamot, an essential ingredient in any Aqua Allegoria fragrance.

Aqua Allegoria Passiflora EDT is a beautiful summer scent, described as a fruity-citrus fragrance with solar facets, it’s inspired by the desire to escape to a faraway garden in tropical lands. Passiflora EDT is a wonderfully fresh and enticing, yet energising scent, opening with top notes of bergamot mingled with drips of tangy passion fruit and energising lemon. Sun-drenched and glittering, the heart of mandarin juice, juicy grapefruit and the crystal-clear waters of a sparkling lagoon lead to a sunny aroma of sensual ylang-ylang at the base, together creating a must-try stunning summertime scent.

  • Top Notes: Bergamot, Passion Fruit, Lemon
  • Heart Notes: Mandarin Juice, Aquatic Note, Grapefruit
  • Base Notes: Ylang-Ylang, Orange Blossom

All the above products are available now at Debenhams.
