Perfume Inspired by Music: Jusbox No Rules Niche Fragrance

Posted on July 16, 2018

As a gal that’s a little bit obsessed with fragrance, honestly nothing excites me more than discovering a new brand! Jusbox Perfumes are a relatively new niche fragrance company that explore the unique connection between scent and music.

You’ll probably be aware that both music and fragrance can be directly linked to our memories – you hear a certain song and it’ll remind you of a certain person, an event, an emotion, and exactly the same goes for scent. Certain smells will take you straight to a point in time in your memory as soon as you smell them. Jusbox aim to unite music and scent, with a unique range of contemporary fragrances inspired by musical icons, eras and genres.

One of Jusbox’s latest launches is No Rules is inspired by punk music…

“…Punk was a teenage revolution. We didn’t know what we wanted but we knew we wanted something different. There were no rules in punk. The only rule was be interesting, be innovative, challenge the status quo. Don’t just say it, shout it…shout it with rage and honesty…. It was an explosion of creativity. Everything changed. It rewrote the rules, it was anarchy, it challenged everything.”

What to expect from a fragrance based on music? It’s hard to know – I would expect something quite unusual and innovative, and I have to say that’s exactly what you get with No Rules. This is very much a unisex scent – it’s no more feminine than it is masculine, and I’d also say it’s quite polarising, I think you’ll either love No Rules or you just won’t get it. On initially trying the fragrance, I’m immediately hit with a soapy note, tinged with a metallic element – it’s like nothing I’ve ever smelled before. The more obvious ‘punky’ notes in this scent being the Metal accord, to remind you of the excessive and very recognisable use of safety pins and studs in the punk movement, Leather, of course for leather biker jackets, and also Vinyl, representing vinyl records. There are also notes of cool Aldehydes and Ether contrasting with the warmness of Cinnamon and Leather.

Punk, by definition was an ‘anti’ movement, there were no rules, and though I wasn’t personally around when Punk was at its full force, so I can’t really appreciate the atmosphere of the time. What I can say is that No Rules is unusual, creative and unexpected, and in that sense it does a fantastic job of representing the punk ethos.

  • Top Notes: Aldehydic, Ethereal and Saffron
  • Heart Notes: Lavender, Vinyl and Cinnamon
  • Base Notes: Leathery accord, Birch bark and Musk

Mendittorosa Le Mat Extrait De Parfum

Posted on December 5, 2015

Hi Guys!

I have a brand new fragrance to share with you today, which is from an Italian niche brand exclusive to Selfridges. Mendittorosa has created this beautiful and very different artisanal fragrance – Le Mat, as the perfect gift for eclectic individuals this Christmas.

I was attracted to this fragrance straight away due to the unusual packaging. Have you ever seen a perfume housed in a wooden box, with an unusual medevial looking image on the front? I very much doubt it. I instantly wanted to find out more. The bottle itself is a simple glass bottle, but it has a hand made white plaster lid – you can see the hand grip of the person that made it clearly in the shape that’s been made.

The bottle also has a red thread wrapped around it’s centre, with a silver bell attached and a disc – again made of plaster, threaded so it sits at the front of the bottle in place of a label.

There’s so many unusual things going on with the packaging, I really wasn’t sure what to expect with the fragrance. The variety and contrast of textures grabbed my interest. There’s something rather captivating about the contrast between the rough, imperfect hand made lid, and the sleek glass that made me think this was going to be a very special scent indeed.

So firstly, I googled Le Mat, which I discovered is in fact a tarot card – ‘The Fool’. Looking again at the packaging, the front does actually look a bit like a tarot card. I don’t have any experience with these things, but I’m sure other’s that are familiar with tarot would recognise this straight away.

So what does ‘The Fool’ mean? Not what I expected! The Fool is indicative of change. Embarking on something new. Maybe a journey, whether physical, or of the mind. It’s about starting something new, with optimism and spontaneity. The Fool also represents uncertainties with the new and unfamiliar when embarking on this journey. It represents an interesting path that lies ahead, that brings forth the excitement and anticipation of the unknown.

So what does it smell like? Well, Le Mat is a warm, spicy, aromatic and comforting scent, described as the ‘odour’ of bravery, gumption and change. With a mantle of nutmeg and black pepper that protects its heart of geranium and rose, the scent unleashes whiffs of patchouli and cashmere wood. A blend of celestial and earthy aromas that instils a sensation of freedom.

The scent itself is a heavy, all encompassing fragrance. There’s a distinct smokiness there, it’s also spicy yet warm and inviting, and as expected it’s definitely unusual. Like nothing I’ve ever smelled before in fact.

The top notes of the fragrance consist of nutmeg and black pepper, with a heart of geranium and rose. The base notes are patchouli and cashmere wood which makes for a warm and very bold fragrance.

I’d love to hear if you could recommend any niche fragrances for me to try?

Le Mat is available now exclusively at Selfridges, for a limited time period.

My Autumn Fashion Wishlist

autumn fashion wishlist

Hi Guys!

Did you know Autumn is officially upon us as of tomorrow? (according to Google anyway) It’s suddenly turned super cold here, resulting in me living in jogging bottoms, my other half’s chunky socks and my red blanket – what a great look hey!

Because of the sudden cold turn in the weather, I’ve also been considering what to update in my wardrobe. On one hand I want to wait till I’ve lost more weight before buying anything new, but on the other hand I love A/W fashion and I JUST WANT TO BUY ALL THE THINGS!

So, out with my beloved yet flimsy (only because they’re made of fabric) Schuh flats I’ve been loving all summer, and in with some sturdy shoes and boots I think! I also really want to get a cape or a wrap of some sort. I’m not sure which though yet, but I think worn right they can look really smart and chic.

Sticking with a seasonal palette of browns, greys and neutrals – with some gold jewellery of course, I’ve put together my top Autumn picks from some of my favourite fashion stores –

  1. Avelon Skinny Fit Trousers from Farfetch
  2. Chronicle Ring Set from Nasty Gal
  3. Givenchy Three Row Bracelet from Selfridges
  4. Vivien Westwood Primrose Zip Tote Bag from Daniel Footwear
  5. Moschino Bear Earrings from Selfridges
  6. Label Lab Lightweight Side Split Dress from House of Fraser
  7. Roll Neck Poncho from Esprit
  8. Matisse Nugent Ponyhair Ankle Boot from Nasty Gal

I’d love to hear if any of these take your fancy?

Cartoon Clutch Bags! | Trend Spotlight

Posted on August 19, 2014

Hi Guys!

So I just happened to be browsing the Selfridges site the other day, lusting after all the gorgeous things that I can’t afford, and I happened to notice there seems to be a bit of a trend for novelty / comedy clutch bags at the moment. I remember the big hoo-ha about Moschino’s MacDonalds themed collection – would you want to sport the famous arches on your designer bag? Personally I wouldn’t, but each to their own. Anyway, Selfridges seemed to have quite a few fun and quirky clutches going on, Charlotte Olympia, the queen of quirky herself had a few fun styles to complement her awesome shoes. I LOVE the Eye Want You clutch. And Anya Hindmarch has a definite snacks based theme going on with her clutches – anyone for a ginger nut??

I’m afraid all these bags will set you back a small fortune, each, not for all of them. Unfortunately I can’t afford a clutch that costs more than a month’s rent, but I’m hoping the high street will catch up soon with their own nifty novelty offerings. I have checked out the usual suspects such as ASOS, Topshop and River Island, but the best I could find was an orange or lemon slice shaped clutch from New Look, as cool as this is it doesn’t compare to a tube of Rich Tea hanging off your arm!

So what do you think? Are these clutches awesome and fun? Or a bit silly and stupid? xx

London Shopping Haul!

shopping bags

Well hello!

Happy Monday all! I thought it was about time I updated you on what I actually bought on my girl’s day out in London. You may have noticed I was saving all the juicy details for another post! I can’t believe It was almost a month ago now that I went! As it was a special birthday treat for us all, I did end up spending a fair bit! (oops)

london shopping haul

So this is my little haul!

I bought these silver chunky Novice Sandals from Topshop, and a couple of necklaces. I love Topshop for shoes and jewellery but often don’t splurge as they can be pretty expensive, and often their shoes don’t fit me very well (due to me being an awkward size 5.5) These have buckles on top and around the ankle though so they fit like a glove, plus they were the last pair in the shop, so it was obviously meant to be! I also saw this amazing Mermaid Makeup Bag and it instantly caught my eye so I had to buy it. I’m pretty sure it’s made of real mermaids…

In Selfridges where we spent most of our afternoon, I paid a visit to the Fragrance Lab where I picked up an amazing bespoke perfume, and I also took a good look around the Food Hall for some gifts for my other half and little boy Fred. I bought Ollie some special chilli crisps and ‘Beyond Insanity’ chilli sauce, as he’s into that sort of stuff. And Fred had a big box of Jelly Belly Jelly Beans.

I just realised I forgot to show my H&M purchase – a Wraparound Skirt, which was definitely my bargain of the day at only £3.99! So that’s my spending done for a while now… (yeah right, until next time)

I hope you enjoyed my post! xxx

Chrysler Ypsilon Vice vs Virtue – A Bank Holiday Day Out!

Posted on May 28, 2014

Hi Guys!

This is the third instalment in my Chrysler Ypsilon & Stylist Vice or Virtue Challenges!

Chrysler have planned this fantastic campaign for the launch of their Ypsilon stylish 5-door city car. For those that don’t know – Ypsilon is actually the greek letter Y. The story goes that the trunk of the letter Y represents our youth and as we reach adulthood we make the choice of taking the path of either vice or virtue… and this is where the idea of the challenges originated from! Research by Chrysler Ypsilon has found that a number of us would love to take the route of vice, but life pressures and fears of what others may think is preventing us from being more daring. Chrysler Ypsilon has partnered with Stylist.co.uk to launch the Vice vs Virtue campaign to encourage women to step out of their daily routine and Dare to be different!

You can check out my first and second challenges and read all about what I got up to! And don’t forget, everyone can join in the fun so make sure you check out the challenges yourself!

This challenge is my first Virtue – ‘Plan a bank holiday day out’. I would have loved to have gone with the Vice option on this one which was ‘Go on a last minute city break to NYC’ if only my wallet would have allowed it!

So, if you follow me on Twitter you may have heard me mention a few thousand times that it’s nearly my birthday! (fyi June 12th, and sorry I get excited from about March, I can’t help it!) And it’s not just any old birthday, it’s going to be my 30th, eeeek! My bestest buds are in the same school year as me, and it just so happens our birthdays are all within a couple of months of one another. We wanted to do something special this year to celebrate together rather than the usual go to the pub or go for a meal, and as Becky and Kat have both just turned 30 and I’ll be joining them in less than three weeks now, we decided to have a special girly day out in London!

There wasn’t really a plan as such, just mooching around the shops, eating lots and just chilling out really. This is completely my idea of bliss. The only thing that could make it better was if it was a whole weekend! And maybe a credit card with no limit…that someone else was paying for! 😉

first resturante

After the not-really-so-long-because-we-were-talking-so-much train journey we headed towards the mecca that is Oxford Street. We started off by visiting a quirky little coffee shop off Oxford Street for a spot of lunch.

Then off to Selfridges! (of course!) Their window displays are always amazing and attract crowds of people taking photos – me included!

selfridges window

Selfridges are currently holding their Beauty Project, a six week in store programme exploring perceptions of beauty. One of the windows had a massive neon display which I loved, saying simply,

tom ford counter

I quickly spotted the Tom Ford beauty counter. Tom Ford makeup is top of my wish list right now – how I managed to pass it without purchasing anything I’ll never know!

I then dragged my friends round the amazing designer fashion floor…

The bags, oh the bags! And the couture!!… I was in heaven. Ok enough fashion! My friends literally had to drag me out of there to head back to the beauty department in hunt of The Fragrance Lab, as I had an appointment booked. Oh, but look what happened on the way…

selfridges beauty project glamorous lady with poodle selfridges boxes

Suddenly the store music stopped and some retro jazz music started playing, it reminded me of the Mr Selfridge TV series. Security guards appeared from nowhere ushering crowds of shoppers to the sides of the aisles, it was all very exciting! Then an amazing procession of fabulous older ladies strutted down the aisles, dancing to the music and posing with preened poodles! They followed a stern looking porter, marching to the music holding a large sign saying,

the older you get, the more fabulous you are!

It was amazing! One of the lovely ladies even stopped with her poodle for me so I could snap a pic!

After this distraction I then headed off to The Fragrance Lab (blog post to follow) while the girls did a spot of shopping.

dolly's afternoon tea

This was obviously all very exciting for us and very tiring, so we decided a stop for afternoon tea at Dolly’s Tea Room was a must…

Let me just zoom in on that cake a bit for you…can you just taste it? 😉

greek meal

After more shopping we ended up at a lovely Greek restaurant in the evening, I’ve never eaten Greek before so it was a new experience for me, and Ioved it! Those weird green things were actually rice wrapped in vine leaves!

girls day out

The day was so much fun, it was great to actually book a day out with my friends. It’s so often that we talk about doing things, but they never actually happen. Big thanks Chrysler Ypilson for the nudge to do this!

Also, I’ll have my London shopping haul and Fragrance Lab posts coming up shortly for you 🙂

I hope you enjoyed my post xxx
