Girl Crushes of the 90’s…
12 December, 2013Hi Guys!
Today’s post is a bit of a different one – for all those who grew up in the 90’s (I started high school in ’95 so you know how old I am now!) I was thinking of who I looked up to, who I wanted to be and who inspired me – my girl crushes! I had quite a few, so for those of the same age group as me, here’s a litle trip down memory lane…
TLC (1994) Ahh I loved these girls, their album of the same name was also the very first casette tape I bought, I remember it well, it had a red cover and I used to listen to it all the time on my Sony Walkman. Those were the good old days! I know every word to every song on this album, including the raps. It’s a shame I can’t remember more useful things in my day to day life!!
My next girl crush was Rayanne from My So Called Life (1994/1995) – best friend to main character Angela (played by Clare Danes). Rayanne was a bit of a bad girl and a rebel, she had her hair bleached and braided, she wore tie dye tops, faded jeans, hippy scarves in her hair and bowler hats, and don’t even get me started on that checked shirt. I actually bought the box set of My So Called life fairly recently, I’m really looking forward to reminiscing!
Shirley Manson from Garbage (1995) Shirley was cool, aloof, grungy and mysterious. My chubby pre-teen self on the other hand, was not! Ha ha! With her porcelain skin, stunning eyes, mini shift dresses and chunky boots, what’s not to like! I used to love the Garbage album too, I remember listening to this song whilst singing along moodily into my mirror.
Kate from the film Hackers (1995) Kate was played by Angelina Jolie – need I say any more? This was a Jolie unlike the one we know today, she was at the tender age of 20 in this film, pre nose job and pre super skinny. She had a striking pixie hair cut, ‘futuristic’ style clothing and an awesome leather biker jacket.
Gwen Stefanie from No Doubt (1995) I loved her baggy trousers and fitted tops, and ‘don’t care’ attitude contrasting with the pin up perfection of her bleach blonde hair and bright red lips. Oh and did I mention that washboard stomach!?
When The Craft came out in 1996, I desparetly wanted to be Nancy. She was everything I wasn’t – cool, the leader pf the pack, stunning and quite a bit scary! I wanted her black hair, brown lipstick, stunning blue eyes and smoky makeup. I also wanted her studded dog collar and pvc jacket. Luckily, I only managed to get my hands on the brown lipstick!

I could go on but I’d be here all day! After watching these videos, and feling a bit nostalgic, I can see there’s definitely a type forming here! I’ve always fancied myself as a bit of a rebel – again which I’m not! This has been so much fun to put together, I might start on my My So Called Life Box Set this weekend! 🙂
Did you grow up in the 90’s? I’d love to hear who your girl idols were!
I hope you enjoyed my post xxx
