Just before Christmas I went on a wonderful walking tour of London with one of my favourite fragrance brands, Penhaligon’s. At the end of the very fun and informative tour, we headed to the nearest store to try out their wonderful fragrances, and this is where I discovered their stunning Portraits Collection…
If you’re a fragrance fanatic you’ll probably be aware that most scents have a story behind them – with some being more involved than others. Penhaligon’s has taken this to another level though with their Portrait’s collection, Penhaligon’s describe this an an ‘olfactory fiction’ where each character or ‘portrait’ is represented by a different fragrance, with a complex and intriguing story attached to each.
To set the scene, we need to head back in time and immerse ourselves into the depths of the British aristocracy. The Portraits collection originates with four fragrances, and follows the story of Lord George and Lady Blanche, their daughter Dutchess Rose, and her husband Duke Nelson. I’ll touch on each of these characters briefly so you can get the gist of the characters and the story…
The Tragedy of Lord George EDP – Lord George is a wealthy and respected man, the archetypal patriarch. He seems to embody the noblest values of the aristocracy: virtue, respect, loyalty and faithfulness. His fragrance reflects his essence; seemingly traditional, yet with hidden secrets.
The Revenge of Lady Blanche EDP – Lady Blanche A darling of London Society, and one of the most influential ladies in Britain. Her aloof beauty, mysterious past and blazing passions are scrutinised by all, and she would do anything to climb the social ladder still further. Her latest scheme is to poison her husband, Lord George, inheriting his wealth and burying his secrets for ever! Her fragrance reflects her very essence: a green floral narcotic.
The Coveted Duchess Rose EDP – Daughter of Lady Blanche and Lord George, Rose married a Duke to escape the stifling rigidity of her family and to become the Coveted Duchess Rose. At first, naively romantic, she has now become disillusioned and frustrated in an unsatisfactory marriage. Always looking for fun and frivolity (and perhaps love affairs), her fragrance is a not so innocent fresh rose.
Much Ado About The Duke EDP – Conforming to the expectations of his class, Duke Nelson married the most coveted girl in London: the Duchess Rose. Yet the Duke is eccentric and unusual, his whimsical airs set society tongues wagging. His perfume is as ambivalent as he is: a floral yet masculine woody fragrance.
And now Penhaligon’s have introduced two new fragrances to the collection that represent the ‘unofficial’ side of Lord George’s dynasty –
Clandestine Clara EDP – A complex creature… A forceful personality, spicy but equally sweet, she has travelled in exotic countries and company – and in her smoky, velvety, woody air you may detect a memory (or three) of his Lordship… She is rebellious, contradictory, independent, unconventional – a woman ahead of her time. But above all, as you will discover, she is a true gourmand, completely delectable (and Lord George would know).
Roaring Radcliff EDP – The secret illegitimate son of Lord George and Clandestine Clara, he’s the sexy and rebellious party animal that indulges in fast cars and even faster wome. A prominent note with Roaring Radcliff is of course tobacco – strong, smoky and distinctive to his set. He also always carries with him gingerbread – adding its sweet spiciness to his father’s love of liquor – in Rutherford’s rum.
Clandestine Clara EDP is a sensual amber oriental, that’s both voluptuous and confident without being overbearing. This fragrance is beautifully enticing, warm, and comforting, whilst being both spicy and smoky. It has a heady depth that’s enticingly gourmand with its vanilla and cinnamon notes, and is amazingly long lasting on the skin. After one spray in the morning, I can still smell this on myself in the evening.
Clandestine Clara is a distinctly feminine fragrance, without being too floral or sweet. It’s sophisticated and confident at first, turning into a soft enveloping embrace of scent on the skin. The notes are as follows –
- Top Note: Rhum Vanilla
- Heart Note: Cinnamon Musk
- Base Note: Ambery Patchouli
You can also see the bottle is simply stunning, as are the rest in this collection. Clandestine Clara is available at Penhalion’s now, and you can read more about the amazing Portraits collection here.
I hope you enjoyed my post xxx
