KAYALI Collection | 01 – The New Fragrance Collection From Huda & Mona Kattan

A refreshing approach to the artistry of Eau de Parfum – KAYALI COLLECTION | 01, imagined by Huda and Mona Kattan, is a perfume concept like no other. KAYALI – which translates from Arabic to ‘my imagination’ – features a collection of captivating fragrances, handcrafted in France using the most luxurious ingredients. This first collection is designed to be layered and combined to create a scent that is truly yours. Inspired by the rich heritage and simple sophistication of the Middle East, KAYALI reflects limitless possibilities, personalities and desires to celebrate and enhance one’s infinite layers. Four scents. A hundred notes. A million moods.

The Kayali brand is the brainchild of Huda beauty founders, Huda and Mona Kattan. The collection includes four fragrances, made to be mixed, matched and layered. Let’s take a look –

The first fragrance, ELIXIR | 11, is essentially the cornerstone scent of the collection and is recommended to be worn in combination with any of the other scents. Elixir | 11 is a beautifully fruity floral scent, opening with sweet notes of Red Apple and Rose Petal Essence, leading to a floral heart of Rose Centifolia with touches of Indian Jasmine Sambac. The base comprises of warm woody notes of Indonesian Patchouli and velvety Amber, enveloped with accents of Vanilla, leaving behind a long-lasting trail.

As with each of the fragrances in this collection, you can wear this alone or layered with others. Personally I think this is great on it’s own, but after trying Huda & Mona’s favourite combination – Musk | 12, layered with Vanilla | 28, and Elixir| 11. The combination results in a beautifully complex, rich, floral scent. Honestly I’m completely in love with this trio!

Next is CITRUS | 08, a contemporary, fresh citrus fragrance. Opening with sparkling notes of Italian Bergamot and Pink Grapefruit mixed with Rhubarb, Blackcurrant and Pink Pepper. The floral heart of Rose Centifolia and Rose Damascena leads to a base of Musk, Tonka and mystical Oakmoss.

This fruity citrus scent quite surprised me simply because on initial testing, I actually wasn’t very keen on it. I usually love citrus fragrances, but this seemed quite sharp and harsh rather than zesty and fruity, especially in comparison to the other scents in the collection. After trying it our on the skin though, it’s a whole different ball game. This is in fact a beautifully warm and fresh citrus fragrance with great longevity.

In terms of scent combinations, Citrus | 08 works really well with Elixir | 11 for a light, fresh day fragrance.

Next is MUSK | 12 – described as emanating power and confidence, MUSK | 12 opens with beautiful floral notes of Lotus Flower, Freesia and Sheer Jasmine, blended with exquisite Musk, warm Vanilla and creamy Sandalwood at the base.

Another fragrance that works perfectly well on its own, Musk | 12 warm, bright and inviting. It’s a wonderfully light, elegant, refined fragrance, and makes the perfect partner for ELIXIR | 11, together create a soft, feminine enveloping scent.

And lastly VANILLA | 28. Now this one really is stunning, this is one of the most beautifully rich and intense vanilla scents I’ve ever tried. This oriental gourmand is verging on edible!

Vanilla | 28 is a melting pot of rich Madagascan Vanilla Orchid, creamy Jasmine and soft Brazilian Tonka, blended with oriental notes of Musk, Amber Woods, Patchouli and Brown Sugar, creating a wonderfully decadent and intense scent. Vanilla | 28 works really well in combination with Elixir | 11 for a striking  evening scent.

The verdict? Well I was hoping for a luxe-feeling, well put together collection offering an array of beautiful fragrances, and that’s exactly what I received. I love that the scents work perfectly well on their own, or if you’re feeling a bit lavish you could treat yourself to more than one to combine them for a truly amazing fragrance experience. The combinations are stunning and definitely worth it if you’re happy to pay the price. On that note, a criticism would be that these are only available in 100ml bottles at the moment, and at £84.00 each it’s going to be a stretch just to purchase one bottle for most people. I’ve just noticed there’s a ‘Minatures’ set of 4x 10ml bottles on the Huda’s US based site – it would be great to see this available in the UK soon.

Anyway I can’t help but love this collection, definitely give them a sniff if you’re heading to Selfridges, and I can’t wait to see what Huda and Mona come up with next for Kayali.

Kayali fragrances are available now at Selfridges and Cult Beauty.
