How To Make Your Home Your Own After You Move In
19 April, 2024
Moving house isn’t always easy, and if you’re going to do it, it’s wise to plan ahead as much as possible to make sure everything goes smoothly. However, while you’ll probably think about the preparation and the move itself, what about after you move in? What happens when the moving company leaves and you’re in your new home surrounded by boxes?
Although there are a few things you’ll need to do, including practical things like letting companies know that you’ve moved – your bank and other financial institutions should be on that list, for example – there’s another important job to tackle; you need to make your home your own. With that in mind, keep reading to find out how you can make your home your own after you move in.
Unpack Right Away
It’s always going to be tempting to leave your unpacking for a while. It’s not a very pleasant job, it’s time-consuming, you’ll be left with lots of leftover cardboard and packaging materials, and it’s not always easy to work out where everything has to go. It’s no wonder that it’s a job that can quickly fall to the bottom of the to-do list!
The problem is that by leaving the unpacking, the chore becomes more and more difficult to do – it’s going to build up in your mind until it seems impossible to even get started on. And, of course, if your belongings are still in boxes days, weeks, or even months after you move in, it’s going to be hard to make your home feel like home at all. The boxes will probably make things feel less comfortable as well.
Therefore, even if you don’t feel like it (which you probably won’t), it’s crucial to unpack your boxes sooner rather than later – immediately is best – and do it methodically. Start with the essentials and as you unpack think about how you want each room to look and work for you. If you need to, this is the time to invest in storage like shelving and baskets so you can keep things tidy from the start – start as you mean to go on.
Purchase New Furniture
Of course, how much new furniture you can buy right away is going to depend on your budget, and it might be that the move cost a decent amount of money, leaving your budget in bits for a little while. That’s fine, and perfectly normal, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make plans for the months ahead.
When it comes to furnishing your home, it’s a great idea to think about bespoke furniture, like a bespoke fitted wardrobe, for example. In that way, you can have an entirely unique piece of furniture that fits your home – and your style – in exactly the right way. Soon enough, with all your new furniture in place, you’ll never know anyone else ever lived there and you’ll feel right at home.
Add Personal Touches
Once you’ve got the basics in place, it’s time to add those all-important personal touches that make a house feel like a home – and, more specifically, that make your new house feel like your home.
What do we mean by personal touches? Well, some good examples would be family photos, which you can display wherever you want – it’s your home, after all. Or what about some souvenirs from your travels or adventures you’ve had in the past? It could be anything at all, from your favourite childhood soft toy to a beautiful photo you took when you were on holiday – there’s no limit and no rules when it comes to your personal touches!
Well, we say no rules, but the truth is you don’t want to go over the top as you’ll end up with a cluttered home, and although it might be full of your things, it won’t be a good place to relax or unwind – you’ll always feel a little on edge and anxious.
Create Cosy Spaces
Finally, don’t forget to create some cosy corners in your home where you can go specifically to unwind after a long day. That could be a reading nook by the window, a comfy armchair by the fireplace, or a hammock in your garden – the choice is yours.
The key is to find a place where you can escape the chaos of trying to put a new home together for a little while if you can – and keep the cosy space there even once you’ve made your home how to want it, as it’s always good to have somewhere comfortable to retreat to.
